One last question before I undertake taking out the carb, should I drain it from the screw on the bottom?  I mean when I open up this thing what am I expeting?  Personally I feel like I'm going to unscrew the top and a bunch of pieces are gonna fall out and I'm gonna say "oh sh**".

Took the fuel tank off and now I'm staring at this think and its staring back and looks quite intimidating.  I've read quite a bit from many posts so I should be prepared....  (Famous last words).

Boy, it sounds like you're not getting any help from that manual Tongue

Well, actually when you unscrew the top, it might act like a jack in the box.  You have a long spring in there Grin

Yep.  You can drain it on the bottom before you remove it.  That's a good idea.  If you don't and then you turn the carb upside down the gas will surprise you by gushing out of those 2 long vent lines.

Diving right in there is the way I get past those famous last words....AAhhhhh....(that's mine)

Gr8!   Undecided

Just sprayed some WD40 on the screws to hoepfully loosen them up so I dont strip em, after reading all the horror stories...

Thanks again everyone.

If I remember correctly, if you just remove the rubber intake mount screws, you can slide the carb out sideways (all as one) off the head and the air box snorkel.

Might want to use a little grease on the o-ring to hold it in place during the reassembly.

Don't forget to loosen the throttle cable retainer on the front left side too.

Thanks Greg, yep I did just that.  Got it open yesterday and changed the needle with the Dynojet needle, and put on the 144 main jet as per the instructions.  Hoefull yhtat will be enough for the Dyna muffler I put on.  Now I need to reassemble and then screw out the idle/mixture screw and get that tuned and (fingers crossed) the thing will start.

What happens if there is no washer under the main jet? Will it be rich>?

Rich is an understatement as lack of the washer may very well let the needle jet tube pop up and then you got a great big hole going from the bowl to the intake

Yep.  Wouldn't want your jet needle and needle jet doing their own thing.  There are different size main jets but they all need a washer.

In the Frame and Chassis Photos thread in the Tech Ref forum, Greg posted this some time back.  Anything requiring vacuum would be OFF when the bike is not running, providing the petc0ck is functioning properly.
