you dont have to drain the tank to pull it UNLESS you dont have the stock petc0ck..

Even then, I'd probably just grab good sized phillips screw driver and stuff it up in there as soon as I pulled the hose loose.  Few drops on the floor.  So what.

Idling thru a parking lot last night and the trusty steed just shut off. No headlight, no neutral light, no power whatever.  Haven't had a chance to troubleshoot yet, but figure fuses would be a good place to start, if I only knew where they were. One thing that troubles me is that my buddy did both front and rear brakes for me the day before and I wonder if a wire got shorted out in the process.  Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. ???

Did you ever figure out your problem??

I think I said this before. I have stock petcock, I f I pull the tank to the rear to clear the rubber mounts in the front,my petcock is back where the frame gets even wider. No way to get it off. In the most forward position, still wouldn't clear, even if you could pull it up. I measured it. I sticks under the frame 1/4" even with the tank pulled as far as you can get it to the left. Only way to get it off. Drain tank and remove petcock. I am going to have to do that again as soon as I get my new cables. Already did the plug door mod. Mine is an '06.

Dang, Hutch, wadda bummer. I can't remember how far back I pull mine before I strt lifting & dragging the rear to the left.
It doesn't feel like it will work, sure doesn't look like it. But, by the slimmest of margins, it does. This time I have the vac line off so I won't be pinching that. There is definitely a "too far back" spot & a Nowhere near back enough spot. It's fiddly, as one guy puts things. The pressure to the left is most unnerving..

The narrowest on mine is when it's all the way to the front. My son and I both tried it together. He watched and helped pull and twist and shove to the left. NO WAY JOSE. Drain and pull petcock. I talked to the mechanic at the Zuki shop and he said they have a problem with a lot of them. Seems the petcock location is to far in board on some. I know when I change my cables I am going to fix that. I'll mark the frame, pull tank the hard way for the last time. Wrap carb in wet rag , fire up the torches, heat the frame, use the side of a large socket and hammer to dent frame in, check for clearance, let cool, sand down, rattle can black. PROBLEM SOLVED.

Same old complaint...petc0ck hits the frame.

Pull back, twist to left, pick up, scratch some paint on the frame, and disconnect wires....and then try to figure out what to set the tank on Tongue

The petc0ck wasn't engineered for the bike, that's for sure.

don't forget to disconnect the speedo cable too, Gregg! (just giving you s@%t, mate! Grin

still, I know the problem it is to get the darn tank off - I didn't scratch the paint the first time I took it off, but did the second time!

I aint worried about the paint, When two people working together can't get it off, it won't come off. Twist ,pull ,shove ,lift, try this every 1/16 of inch along frame. At closest point it is still under frame 1/4 inch.

It still comes off in said fashion.

And to make it easier next time, try to remember way back to your youth.  Put a little vaseline on those rubbers.

My rubbers seem to have swollen up a bit. I would't be afraid to use KY or something like that. I used somethnig,I can't
remember what, tho. I think it was wax from a toilet seal. I keep that stuff around to put on screws I want to run into wood with a drill. remember, rubbers bust when vaseline gets on them.

I know what the mechanic said, & I had a lot harder time last nite pulling that tank with the rubbers in a bind, (Maybe the wax dries up?) I had to slap on the righ rear  of the tank while I held up on it ti clear the petrooster. Had probs going back, but it went. The grommets at the rear I do different. I put the thin circle in the bottom & stick the large end with the raised section thru from the top.

I'll just heat and "dish" the frame so it comes off like it is suppose to. No wrestling involved.

Interesting topic...we have vaseline, KY jelly, rubbers, and toilet tank wax all in one.

I think that there is a difference in rubbers (ya think?)  One is latex...Tongue

Anyway, it's ain't nothing but a thang.  The tank comes off with some wrestling...and a speedo cable disconnect, too.

They had vaseline in your youth?

Did a little research: "Vaseline was created by Robert Chesebrough in 1870"

I guess they did then...
