Was that a shotgun in my garage?

So the savage is running great now...... idles wonderfully.... runs good... accelerates well....shifts smoothly... only problem is the backfire.  I know that this is a common issue with the Savage, but based on my searh results, my problem seems to be different than most.  I have NO backfire during acceleration or deceleration..... but when I it the kill switch, it sounds like a shotgun going off in my garage.  It is TOTALLY unacceptable as far as my homeowners association is concerned.  I can be fined by the association for havng a vehicle that backfires in the developement.  Any suggestions?

Mine does that too. Seems to help if I rev it a bit, quickly before killing it, but doesnt always work. At idle mine poops out a boom about a second or two after I kill it.

If the engine was warmed up and there isn't any doubt of air leaks any where - header at the engine and connection at the muffler, intake tube between the carb and the cylinder- you should be able to find the sweet spot that doesn't backfire on shut with very slight adjustments of the idle mixture and idle speed - like 1/16 of a turn or less slight.

Until you get it right you can leave it in gear hand on the brake and slowly killit with the clutch.

Mine did the same thing. I turning out the idle mixture screw and got rid of all the backfire and smoothed out the power band all in one shot. Cheapest mod ever.

Just tell them it was your shotgun and you were testing out some new ammunition to take to the next home owners meeting.

I use Gregg's stealth approach, killing the motor at the street corner and rolling the last half block home.

Prob lem with this is that I live in the VERY back of my developement.  It is 1 mile from the entrance to the developement to my house and There are 2 stop signs I have to turn at. LOL
