Maybe. what kind of tach do you have? generally you'll find a ground say near the horn and hook to the leads on the coil - power the light from there as well

Been wanting to ask the same question, but let me expand it a little. All I have is an automotive type tach/dwell meter. How do you convert from a 6 or 8 cylinder reading???

good question - I think a v8 fires 4 times per revolution and since the savage is a dual fire - fires every time the piston goes up - I'd say 4x of what the v8 setting shows

By the tach directions you will connect it to the ignition coil under the tank.
If it has a lamp you'll have 3 wires...Positive, Signal, and Ground.
It's really simple once you remove the tank. You'll have enough gas in the carb to start it and test with the tank off.

Now, I'm lost. Are we talking a diagnostic tach or a permanent mounted one?

Diagnostic for now. After the rejet and muff I reset the idle by ear but would really like to know for sure. Took long enough to convince the missus I deserved a bike. Not wanting to push too much too soon. Plus I now have 359 house payments to go. Permanent mount is on the top of my list. Have always had one in my personal cars.

i have an small ( i need my reading glasses to read it)inexpensive(under $40) digital tach from pit possee..1 wire wraps around plug wire 5-6 times, no back light, use it mainly for idle adjust, mounted to bracket that holds oil temp gauge on handle bar..works ok tho a lil slow on response..has non resetable run time meter also.

I had one that sounds a bit larger from Northern Tool and Equipment that worked well but the vibration finally killed it. I think it was made for stuff like portable generators, pumps, etc.

I had the Northern Tool and Equipment on for year and a half. It sudenly died. Opened it up ( void the waranty if any) and fount the battery soldered and sealed in place. No repairs possible.
Anyway, I also believe it is for lawnmowers or stationairy engines; the indication was slow to follow the throttle movement.
Got one from Byron, quite satisfied with that, expensive though. And I like instruments/indicators with needles.

Er, wouldn't that make the 'ole thumper a two-stroke? Is there something I've been missing all these years that makes the Savage engine different?

It's a magnet triggered ignition, runs off flywheel magnet and p/u coil, so it fires every revolution (just like a 2 stroke) I think they call it 'wasted spark'
