Speedometer Buzz

69 degrees here today. Went on a ride for the first time without a FF helmet and made it 20 miles until the speedometer buzz turned me around (Had a 3/4 on, btw). Got back and solved the problem. Thanks to Ken Long for posting the solution elsewhere. Thought I would add a picture here (Maybe its already here, but I couldn't find it).

Anyway, only takes about an hour. Used 1/4" shrink tube, because thats what I had. It was a little tough sliding it on. Added an O-ring to the base before installing the spring.

The buzz is gone and nothing but the rumble of the sporty remains.

Ever since I did the heat-shrink and o-ring fix (I actually used thick fiber washers instead of o-rings) the speedo buzz has not come back. It sure is nice to cruise around without that buzz!

We were at 62f here today. The Savage had a mind of it's own on the ride home from work. The normal 12 mile ride turned into 53 miles today!

Took the tank off for spacer mod and decided to use your Speedo mod. Someone else suggested to add weatherstripping. I did both. The buzz is gone. Thanks for your trial and error to perfect a "Necessary Mod".

The location of the shrink tube is not threaded. Once you take the speedo out, it will make sense. After inserting the finished product back in, then you'll want to put O-rings or fiber washers on before the spring.

Thought about the weatherstripping, but the seal is rubber, so I assumed it would dampen any vibration just as well. Seems to work, time will tell. One would assume that over time, the shrink tube will wear and the metal parts will bear on one another again. From what I've heard on here, some have ridden several years without its return.

It works great but yours definitely looks better when you have the speedo out.

It appears that the rtv is under a washer that the spring sits on. How did you do that without removing it? I assumed you meant you just smeared a layer over the springs. Or maybe I'm seeing things. ???

In early 2003 I'd heard of the buzz from others on Be_Savage, and then Savagette's bike started it, too.

And since I was in the middle of tearing my engine apart (which had her paranoid), she insisted on taking her 1 year old bike to the dealer. We did.

When we went to pick it up, they said they couldn't find anything wrong. They said they had test driven it. I rode it around the block, heard the sound, and took it back. They rode it again, but said they couldn't do anything about it. Out of frustration, we took it home and Savagette agreed to let me mess with it.

That's how long the goop has been in there...and now she let's me do all the maintenance on hers Tongue
