What's this "loose bolt"?
01/30/07 at 18:35:03

I'm ready to put the cylinder head cover back on the engine, and I think I have matched up all the bolts by length with the picture in the Clymer manual (although they aren't all the right color according to the manual: black, yellow, chrome).
But what does the "loose bolt" look like? There was no bolt in this hole when I got the bike, and the bike had no chrome top covers.  Is the loose bolt in the left front to go up through the head cover and then through the chrome cap, and then finally get a nut on top? Is it just a 65mm bolt like the other head cover bolts, with the head inserted in the cavity in the cylinder wall/fins?
Any and all help appreciated!
Am I correct in assuming that an L65 bolt is just a bolt with a 65mm threaded section?

I am assuming you mean the bolt that is up by the decomp. cable. It has to go in before you put the head back on and it will stay loose till you get the chrome cover back on( I think). It just kinda slips into a recess by the cable and then the head holds it in place. As for the threads and bolt description I can't help. My bolts were not color coded or stamped with grade marks or anything.

its the one that has a nut between the fins in the front of the head.Holds the head to the cylinder. should be one in the back too.go back a few pages to where it details removing the head from the cylinder.
the letter decribes the finish of the bolt, the # is the millimeter length of the bolt.

I'm going to use the chrome covers.
So this bolt has 2 nuts: one to clamp it in the recess of the fins and one on top of the chrome cover?

If that's your altrnative, go ahead and install it that way.

Mine is a long bolt inserted from the top, through the chrome cover and a nut inbetween the fins of the cilinder.
Think the previous owner forgot to put it in when he/she put the headcover on.

Mine is the other direction, with the nut on top.  See items 34 and 35 below.

If the bike is already put together, the best way to handle the situation is to do exactly like Kropatchek- install the bolt from the top and hold the nut with a wrench between the fins. Not a  big deal.

No, I haven't put the head cover back on yet. I'll decide whether or nut to use the chrome covers and then deal with the bolt. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I want the chrome covers. Is anybody else running without them?

Why not use the chrome covers?  Is this laziness speaking?

Where's that topic about changing a good thing???

If you drop in the bolt from the top and the nut inbetween the fins you have a choise: chrome covers or no chrome covers. Think about it.

I figured it out. Thanks for all your help. I will use a regular 65mm bolt with the head in the cavity, so the nut can go on top of the chrome cover. I think I'll use the chrome covers with the trap door mod. I want to be able to access the spark plug.
