Until recently I hadn't heard of a leaking petcock...that was new to me.
But has anyone ever had a plugged petcock?

What's a petthingy Greg ?
It's a common failure on the Savage. There's a post in the tech section about converting a petc0ck to manual operation.

Thanks. I have some catching up to do. I definitely don't want my petcock to get plugged

condensation in the vacume line to the petc0ck could freeze and shut off gass..running on prime bypasses the vacume circuit i think...

AND, the vacuum line doesn't really get warm while you're riding in freezing weather, so if that were the problem, I'd experience trouble every time the temperature dropped below 32, and the problem would persist even if the engine warmed up, which is what's happened.
Running on PRI seems to solve all the problems. Is it necessary to remove the vacuum line and cap off the ends? Will I run into problems if I don't?
Step 1, I'll drain the carbs and cross my fingers.
Dumping a little bit of HEET into the gas tank would be bad, correct?

Condensation in the vacuum line? Come on. Just how much water is going to condense out of the air in that small little line considering that the engine was hot (and dry) when it was parked? And if there was condensed water in the line, is it gonna run uphill and gather in the petc0ck?
I'll buy the idea of gas leaking down the vacuum line, but just 'cause we can't see in there doesn't mean magical stuff is going on.
I'm still betting on water in the gas. Happens all the time, but most of the time it is no problem.

If it's leaking, you'll have to cap it at both ends. If going to prime is fixing your problem, it's not leaking, it's sticking. (maybe due to cold?) then you don't need to cap it and it may be o.k. come summer.

Thanks, all. I had a lot of trouble starting it this afternoon, but I also left the petcock on PRI all day, so I'm hoping that that explains it and the bike's still reliable on PRI. Glad that I don't have to pull the tube. I still have to drain the carbs. I tried to do it today, but my screwdriver was too long. I'll wrench it tomorrow and drain the whole thing.
I figure that a few days from now either I'll be confident that putting it on PRI will solve all of my problems until summer, or it'll have completely crapped out on me. I'll report back in a few.

I've been having a problem with running with it in the on position ever since I got the bike. I use secondary all the time and it runs fine. Had the petc0ck out and completely disassembled didn't spot anything wrong. But I did replace the vacuum hose and it does run ok in the on position but no longer confident in it.
Hey I saw a intruder petc0ck on ebay and it looks the same. Anyone know if it's interchangable?

As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Myself...we have an 00 and 01 with never a petc0ck problem with either one.

I have a '98 and I have had no problems with the petc0ck, but maybe I'm lucky. I know I did replace the fuel line and vacuum line right after I bought it. In fact, when I bought an Amal carb, I had to decide whether to convert the petc0ck to ON/OFF/RES or to "make" a vacuum port on the new carb. I decided I like auto-off functionality of the vacuum-actuated petc0ck and modded the carb.

How was the cable hookup changing from Mikuni to Amal?

I think I could have made the original cable work but Lancer supplied a new cable with the carb and it was pretty simple.

Why don't you get the H... out of the cold?
In Florida we have no income tax. So freeze your butt and pay the tax.
