I need pilot jet info.
01/08/07 at 11:08:43

The local shop is treating me well. They will buy a pack of 4 pilot jets & sell me one. Better than most shops. I need the part number or at least pyysical description of the pilot. The catalogus showed 2 styles. Each had holes in the body. One had an upset on the end, like on a nipple a piece of tubing would slide on & a hose clamp put on it. The other was almost smooth at the end. Is this too vague & ambiguous to be any help? Can anyone save me the hassle of opening the carb & pulling the pilot, just to reinstall it & wait for the replacement? I sure would appreciate it. Thanks all..

the jets are called Mikuni bs40 large round.  i dont know what you've done to her so far but if you're thinking of muffs and airfilters, you want to go with the 55 pilot.  depending on your sea level, and leanness, either 150, 152.5, or 155 main will do

I need a part number for the 55 pilot. I am not having probs getting the main. The shop needs to know what to order for the 55 pilot. there are 2 styles see description above. if you know which description is the one I need, then I can do the deal. otherwise, I will have to open the carb, Look at the part, order the one I need. re enter the carb & swap it. I am trying to avoid the hassle.

Well,, I got the aircleaner & 6 pack O baffles today, I wasn't ecpecting them till the end O the week. I will just pull the bowl, ( if the screws don't strip) & change to the 155 main & pull the pilot & look at it closely. The order accordingly. Thanks folks, I wasn't ex[ecting to be in the carb so soon or I wouldn't have bothered with the question.

I was just at the local dealer today buying a K&N drop-in filter and a pilot jet. The jet I ordered was the O.E.M./N515.067 from that page. This pilot jet doesn't have any holes in the side. The only hole is the one that goes straight down the center. The carb still had the 52.5 stock pilot jet in it and I ordered a 55. BTW, my 2002 had a 145 main jet in it. I plan to replace it with a 152.5 when I put it all back together.

I just noticed a typo on that page. They call it N515.067 in the heading but the drawing scan shows the correct number of N151.067. My receipt from the dealer says "N151.067 55".

What does replacing the 52.5 jet with the 55 jet do for performance?

I bought jets from that eBay seller. Notice that his auction has the "best offer" feature. He sent me a #55 and a #155 for $15 shipping included. I like having parts dropped at the door. It was worth the extra dollar or two. Plus we shot the bull about tuning a Savage a bit. I'd buy from him again.

The Savage runs lean with the stock jets.  The pilot jet controls the low throttle range (idle to about 1/4 throttle ... it continues to supply fuel all the way to full throttle but is basically insignificant above 1/4 throttle)
It is this excessive leaness that is primarily responsible for the backfiring issues.
The mixture is so lean that some of the fuel gets out of  the cylinder unburned and collects in the exhaust system, then will ignite later as a small explosion ... that is the backfire.

Lancer,
Is this the only cause of the backfire?
I still get some pops after my mods. Will this eliminate them?
