Thats about $60.00 past my willingness level. I spose I will just have to accept the oil is exactly as hot as it is & hope I don't scorch anything.

I found this thread on another forum:

http://www.intruderalert.com/cafe/index.cfm?page=topic&topicID=87534

Maurader & VS750/800 uses the same oil cap temperature gauge.

I have found the gauge on the german ebay site just not terriby happy about ordering that way.

So, Reelthing, did you put this on your Savage?  If so, how hot do you normally run?

well it's in that C stuff - but warmed up the '95 runs 80-85c and when it get's hot say I've been sitting in traffic - around 100c - anything over that and I'll park it for bit and let it cool off

OK, to convert from C to F just multiply by 9 divide by 5 and then add 32.  So 100C = 212F.  212F seems a little toasty, but not too bad at all.  Do you have an oil cooler installed?

Actually, you should be "safe" up to 115C as long as its not for extended periods, but I prefer 90C and below for normal operating temps.  100-115C is "safer" with synthetic oil tho, since dino juice can begin to sludge and need to be changed quicker.  But as I said before, the engine can hack it.

No oil cooler yet, the deal is the temp probe is not in the oil but really measures the air temp in the case, I've read where the oil maybe 30-40f hotter than this type of measurement because of air running in and out of the case with piston movement - it's pretty rare for it to go over 100c - if I'm stuck at long light in heavy traffic when it's say >90f in the summer I've seen it get a little over it - yes syn oil here v-twin M1 20w-50 for the summers.

service manual says to warm up to 60 c (140f) when taking oil pressure readings..
found these conversion formulas:
to find C  subtract 32 from degrees F and divide by 1.8

to find F   mutiply degrees C by 1.8 and add 32

60C x 1.8 =108 + 32 = 140F

gauge due tuesday, man classic cruiser is SLOW  ordered 12/18

Left the cap loose once.  With the amount of spray coming out of there, I'm sure it's not just reading air temp.

9/5 = 1.8, really... you guys and your calculators! Wink
