Trying to rejet a 1998 Savage
01/05/07 at 17:48:23

I'm so frustrated!!!  My dealer's mechanic has ordered two different dynojet kits and says that they're the wrong size for the 1998!!!  It's been in their shop for almost two weeks!!

Can someone tell me what exactly I need for him to do this rejetting??  What size, etc?  I don't know anything about this stuff!

Thank you in advance.

When I'm on the VTX, I'm a smooth operator but when I ride the Savage, I'm back to the basics!!! (and loving it!)

You can just buy the jets at the dealership and install them yourself. I just bought some today for  $2.50 mains and $7.50 for pilot. About the size it really depends on your location ie sea level and mods done on the bike itself. let me now what and I'll try to help or someone else can help you. Good Luck

So, tell me again why you don't feel qualified to do this? If you have to hold his hand to get him the parts & he is charging you for doing it, are you feeling taken advantage of yet? I would take the bike home & do it. The money ya spend on a few tools you will save on that, what did you call him? Mechanic?

If you want to rejet your bike without using the Dynojet kit, we can tell you how. What muffler is on your bike, have you done anything to the intake/air cleaner, and at what elevation do you live?

I don't think Savage carbs have changed much from 1988 to 2007. If the Dynojet kit fits a Mikuni BS40 it should work.

maybe consider savagedude's offer from your previous post. pull the bike from the stealership, meet another savage owner, learn how to do it, while fostering a new friendship.

I have a '98, Jardene muffler, am at 300 ft elevation and no airbox mods other than removing the snorkel. Which jets do I need?

The Jardine people need to jump in here and tell you what they're running. It's a pretty free flowing muffler. I would think a 152.5 or 155 main jet. Go with 1/2 white spacer and turn out the slow mix screw until your idle is strong.

One other thing. Again, I'm not sure what jets are currently in the bike as of yet or how long that muffler has been on the bike but the muffler is blued at the entrance where it joins the pipe and has a fair amount of soot on the exhaust outlet. The pipe is blued at the head and the bike backfires on throttle rolloff.  More clues?

I'm running a 152.5 main, 55 pilot, Jardine muffler, K&N drop in filter, approximately 1 1/2 to 2 turns out on idle mix, and live at approximately 4500 to 5000 Above Sea Level.

MY Savage runs strong at this setting with only a little bit of crackling on decel and even that is starting to go away the more I ride it.

I am at 1500 feet in pheonix, where it routinely hits 110 degrees. I run a 152.5 main, stock 52.5 pilot, 1- 1 1/4 turns out, and 2/3 spacer. Jardine muffler, cheesed airbox, snorkel removed, stock air filter (K&N Cone on the way).  She runs like a champ and can easily hit 85. You can change the jets on her in about 20 minutes, especially if you have the allens installed. Though if your float bowl screws aren't over tight a small phillips can get in there.

Good luck and ask questions. these bikes are very easy to work on and darn near impervious to mistakes. They may run like crap after a mistake, but bounce right back when you put things right

i got the jets from electronics-4-fun on ebay.  He still has 55 pilot and 155 main jets which is something that would work with the amount of airflow your talking about.  Do a search for it and ask him for a deal on buying both.  Go rescue you bike from the evil clutches of the stealership and bring her home to your castle.  I was in the same boat as you, i have no experience on anything mechanical and i was able to rejet and mod my carb over a weekend.  All it takes is a Clymer and some patients.
