Carb/Exhaust/tuning question
01/02/07 at 18:06:37

???The Terminator project is beginning! I think I have read somehwere that the jetting in the carb off my basket-case 87 is different from the jetting in my 97. So here is my  tuning proposal/questions for my 97:
stock airbox with rubber snorkle removed
supertrapp slip on with 6 discs to start
carb from 87 or rejetted carb from 97
This idea is just a starting point, and I would welcome any and all input from all of you who are more knowledgeable than I about the Savage!
What are the pros and cons of using the 87 carb as opposed to the 97 carb?
If rejetting, what jets would you recommend? My goal is smooth running with the best MPG possible.
Thanks again for all the encouragement!

As with most basket cases, trial and error will be your rule of thumb. BUT.....the older carb has bigger jets already in it. Now that's not to say that you wont need to go up more but at least you will be richer to start with.

With a stock engine and a supertrapp muffler it really will not matter which model year of carb you use, either one will need to be rejetted to match the muffler anyway.  If you have an older model carb in good condition which still has the needle with the 3 grooves in it, the jetting process will be made a little easier though.
The end result, assuming the jetting is done properly, will be the same.

Once you commit to slip on mufflers, rejetting the carb, and low resistance air filters, you need to forget about fuel milage. It won't get better. You will loose 2-6mpg.
When you roll open the throttle, you will find no reason to go back.

You need to find out what is in that 87 carb. I think this one has richer jets than your 97.
I suggest you don't use the 87 carb because it has older rubber parts and gaskets. The jets could be swapped if you find they are different. Don't loose that backup carb. It could be overhauled with all new parts and be ready for a swap.

What is the standard main and pilot jet size on a 97? Is a 150 main a good place to start with a Supertrap with 4-6 discs?

The factory main on the 97 is a 145.5 unless I am mistaken.

145 or 147.5?

starting w/ a 150... well, it'll probably be lean... I like to start rich and keep leaning it till it runs right... might foul some plugs, but no burnt engine...
