There's a set of rules for that Made in USA label.

And I'm 100% positive it doesn't include all materials and labor originate in the USA.

Same from other countries.  I know Japanise have been buying parts from China just like everyone else.

I believe the Toyota PUs were marked "Assembled in the USA" in an effort to evade a stiff tariff (25% as I recollect) on foreign manufacured PU. I think the newest model Toyota PU is made in assembled in Texas as that us considered the center of PU country.  Many new vehicles will have a content sticker on them noting % of parts per country of origin. Since NAFTA, I believe many vehicles we think as USA manufactured are built in Mexico or Canada and only minimally noted on the vehicle. Also many what we used to consider imported and now locally built, including one model of Mercedes. some of you who live in the southern states can tell us which other ones. Max

Toyota, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes, Honda (2 and 4 wheelers), and Kawasaki all build vehicles in the USA.

The Freightliner I drove today had Hecho en Mexico on the ID plate. The White/GMC big rig I drove today was made by Volvo.

A shirt I wanted said Made in Vietnam on the label.

World market economy. But you still get what you pay for from the Japanese brands (for the most part), except Subaru...gutless junkers. The Subaru flat 4s Honda modified for the early Goldwings were good engines, wonder what happened in the interim?

Thank you all for responding.

I have no motive for asking this question other than to satisfy my curiosity.  Today I found the "Made in Japan" printing on my bike, so it looks like you all are acurate.

I have respect for Japanese quality control (and their products in general)  Other Asian countries make some good products as well (Taiwan makes good motor scooters, Korea makes good musical instruments, etc.)
Heck, even the US makes some good stuff !!!

Thanks again for your input (... and John, no hard feelings!)

Someone over at Intruderalert.com posted a claim that many of the later model Suzuki's now have Chinese-manufactured engines in 'em ... he did cite the S40 & 50 models too ... he didn't clarify if by "China" he meant Taiwan or the Peoples Republic ...  Roll Eyes

Personally, I don't believe that claim either way ...

OTOH ... The Kawasaki 650KLR is now manufatured at a Kawi plant in Bangkok, Thailand according to the latest issue of Canadian Biker magazine ...

a few years ago dt125/dt175 were made in portugal for european market with just the engine coming from japan,
perrydasavage is right in part a lot of engines are now built in china,
take a look ay ebay.co.uk and look up m/cycles under 250 cc some strange names there but all based round older jap bike technology most seem to be Honda engines, who knows what will happen to our big single when suzuki sell of the build rights. may be a 750 or bigger.
I bought a door for my Surburban it came from tiawan ?

I worked for a company that imported alot of parts from Taiwan over 20 years.  The cost of assembly in Taiwan is comparable to assembly costs in Calif, which is pretty darn high.  Over the last few years, our Taiwanese manufacturing partner had open plants in China to reduce labor costs.  And many of the Japanese companies have done the same.  The difference is strict control of quality.

Thumperclone, you mentioned your CT 70 replica,  I have a question for about who sells the best versions of these.  However, I should ask you on a different page (as this one is solely dedicated to the Savage/S70.)  Let me know where I can post this type of question.  Thanks!

If you make something in a foreign land that requires tooling, and decide this isn't working out.  Getting the tooling from that 'associate' will be very difficult.

Reverse engineered? Hell they use the original drawings.  After all they were making the parts at one point or another.
