New muffler and flames!!!!

Quick question -
I bought a "Screamin' Eagle" muffler from my local HD parts guy. Installed it today on my son's bike. It had a hard time staying on - every time he stopped, it would stall out. We got running it on the freeway but when we stopped after 3 miles, it stalled again. I tried to start it but it shot flames out of the pipe!!! I looked in the pipe and it was RED hot and glowing. I let it cooled down and got it home. I think that it needs to be rejetted and was wondering it this would fix the problem.

When I'm on the VTX, I'm a smooth operator but when I ride the Savage, I'm back to the basics!!! (and loving it!)

I'll bet you are right. Since these things run lean from the factory & you opened the exhaust up in a big way this thing is needing soem GAS!

Think there's a couple model of the SE pipes - one I was looking over did not have a baffle of any kind just a little plate to add a small amount of back pressure over a straight pipe - perhaps that was glowing - none the less I'd sure re-jet before I'd run it much at all.

Brother,
They are 2 quality slip on pipes for your savage, the supertrap and the jardine. The HD stuff is fine for a harley but not for the savage. I know many users here run the Dyna pipe, Harley clone pipe and other questionable products and all of these bikes have a string of problems, just read the email threads on this site . Go with the trap or jardine and dump the harley pipe. I have 3 extra HD pipes in my shed, near brand new that I was given from other savage owners here in New Mexico due to issues with them. Flames out of the pipe is bad news, and yes the jetting is way off. Don't ruin your bike with harley pipe, go with properly designed unit from a real pipe building firm like trap or jardine. I love Harleys and had my share of them but the savage is really not meant to run the dyna, sportster of other HD type pipes. Be careful here for what you are riding, as it is, really is very dangerous.
Lets us know how it works out.
Be Well
Richie

I have the supertrapp, and sure its a bit expensive but its well worth it. What a nice sound, and you dont have to rejet, just add or remove disks. Add a K@N air filter. It took me a whole 20 minutes to mount the muffler. I had to do no cutting or welding. Everything matched right up. I have not heard a harley muffler on a Savage but i have heard a jardine and rode behind Gregg D and his raask. The supertrapp sounded much better. Nice deep rumble where the raask was like a huge blatt.

MAC makes one specifically for the Savage, as does Raask.

I love my Harley pipe, but any non stock more free flowing muffler will make it run even leaner and harder to idle. Do the jetting.
