What is the real Red-line for this bike?

According to the 2002 Owners Manual:
The recommended top speed of this engine is 6500rpm;
6500rpm in 1st gear = 35mph
2nd gear = 55mph
3rd gear = 75mph
4th gear = 90mph
6500rpm in 5th gear = 100mph.

Now, what is the real redline for this engine? ???

I try to keep it within the manual recommendations, but can I go further without blowing it up? ???

(Peak pistion speed is a better measure of when an engine will blow-up.) Do we know the length of the connecting rod in the Savage? Barry

Reply #3 - 12/17/06 at 05:27:33 Geo, Based on Clive's response, I would not push the Savage beyond 6500. I don't think you gain anything by reving beyond that anyway. I'm sure by the time you hit redline, power is already dropping off.

Reply #5 - 12/17/06 at 05:31:51 I wouldn't push it past 6500 either. The reciprocating mass of that big single piston is quite heavy. Like barry68v10 said, you'll be out of power due to small ports and a mild cam long before that anyways. Short shift it. It'll probably accelerate just as quick and it'll last longer.

What are you trying to achieve?? The redline on my CB was 11K. I never wanted to get close to it. I'm trying to stay away from the redline on this bike as well.

got to say I agree with Brewbrother. fine if you are wondering what it is out of curiousity, but if you want to know so you can try to scream up to it in any gear you are going to take a lot of life off your bike. it is after all a big single engine with lots of lovely torque & is not built to run @ high speeds.

my big trouble has always been the love & rush of acceleration over the speed a bike can deliver. really why I love the Savage in many ways - the way it winds up to a given (modest enough) road speed not through engine speed but through the "grunt" @ my command.

I would think it was timing. The group has explored most other avenues of experimentation. Whats the drive to get higher RPM?? I rode a coworkers honda 900 sport bike. He said it was a CBR. Plenty of crazy speed. No longer my cup of tea.

Reply #12 - 12/17/06 at 21:30:31 I heard in other threads of people revving this thing to 7500rpm. I wanted to make sure revving to this level was a bad idea. I'm sure now not to exceed 6500rpm.
