Trailer Fender Radius

Couldn’t find this subject with searching, so here goes:

I’ve seen pictures of lots of Savage’s with trailer fenders on the rear, many from Germany, but some from this side of the pond. What size fender is common to use? Yeah, I slept through that day of Geometry! Wink

I’m right in guessing that the arc of radius stays the same as the 15” wheel, even out at the distance of the fender though huh?

So fenders designed to fit 15” trailer wheels should be about the right arch to start cutting a rear fender from… yes/no?

Not a bad Idea. I do have a new rear tire not installed that could be used for checking. However, once I find the correct radius the fender may come from eBay.

Get one on ebay and the shipping will cost you that much.

The other day when I saw this post I got a tape measure & went out to the bike. I held the tape about an inch or so above & behind the axle & if I remember 14" fit the curve of the fender from there. An idea would be for you to go look at yours doing the same thing. You may stumble on the radius you really want by staring at where you want it.
The reason I didn't post this then was i thought it looked goofy then, I still do but I haven't seen you get exactly what you need so I will risk looking goofy to try to help.

Turns out that your estimate of a 14" radius looks pretty close to me. I was doing a lot of measuring, and realized that the new rear tire for my Savage is almost exactly the same diameter as the 14" tires on the wife's car.

One reason I was asking for opinions is because I've noticed that a lot of Savages with trailer fenders have fenders with too much radius. I think they must be using
fenders with a 15" radius, and they just don't follow the curve of the tire well; which I suppose is more or less important depending on the look desired.

Took it to the store and put it under the fenders of various sizes to see which one looked the best.

Lancer, Good to see you posting again.

What did you think was the most attractive fender radius?

The radius can be changed with a torch & hammer & dolly. The innermost edge of the radius on each side can be shrunk or stretched to change the profile of the fender.

Thanks for the link. There are a couple of things besides fenders on their "chopper" pages, at very reasonable prices, that I've been watching for. Like those slim cat eye tail lights.

Doing something like that had crossed my mind, if I try to shop fenders locally. We have some dedicated trailer supply places in town, plus the area farm and ranch supply- "Atwoods" carries a small varity.

OTOH, I've seen some more fancy rounded edge and chrome fenders online that look good, if they'd fit. And that is what got me curious about the best fitting radius measurement.
