I have been reading here for hours. The mods I see look very ijnteresting. I would like the added power & some are getting better mileage than I do with my stocker. Can't imagine having this thing run better & provide better mpg at the same time.

I would like to know how far below the lower triple tree the fork brace would mount? I only have about 3 inches of fork tube above where the fork seal gets in a hard braking situation. Maybe I need to address the dive in the fron end?
I am sure I need a fork brace since I can feel it twist when making a severe correction.
 I found a place here that had several samples of muffler sounds. From what I could get out of it the Supertrapp sounded fine! But, I am gonna have to ballance sound against the almighty Dollar & decide based on MPG & power. As long as I get the MPG & power I will accept the sound ( if not too loud) of the least expensive exhaust. I expect I could get a Sportster exhaust from a cycle shop. Surely there are HD riders going to aftermarket exhausts on their new HDs. Maybe I can get a takeoff for cheap? Do they offer a reasonable racket & still allow jetting that gives 50+ MPG? Anyone have first hand experience with the sound of a Trapp & Sporty? I prefer a low pitched exhaust. I don't want  loud pipes. I guess the Sporty wouldn't be loud since it is a stock part. ????

Whats the cheapest answer you know of? I've seen a J.C. Whitney for about $80.00 I think. Been a while since I looked at that. Soon as I get an exhaust Ill get the stuff for the carb rounded up. That UFO thing looks good, to. Seems like a guy could build a slug to fit in the bottom of the slide & accomplish the same thing.

I saw a post on porting & polishing. There was mention of a stud protruding into a port. Which one is it? Seems that would be a short enough project & be worth the time.

Thanks to all who read & consider this Newbies questions. I assure you I have plenty  more!

The for brace mounts just above the fender on the lower section of the fork.  Since the upper section of the fork slides into the lower section, the brace does not hit anything as the   fork moves.

I put a HD Dyna muffler on my Savage.  Seems to exactly like the Sportster muffler except for the mounting. It was a take-off that I bought from the local HD dealer for $20.  You'll need a custom adapter from a muffler shop, about $10.  You'll also need a couple of muffler clamps, maybe another $20, and assorted mounting hardware, about $5.  

If you go this route, make sure the muffler DOES NOT have the crossover, which is a small fitting on the side of the muffler that connects to the second muffler.  That would leave you with a hole in the muffler.

Here's one with a Jardine, carb tuned, Progressive shocks, fork brace, Metzlers, drilled rotor, tach, stem clock, highway pegs, hellcat windscreen, front of the seat lifted around an inch via #7 rubber plugs - keeps you from the slide forward on hard brake, less numb but, turns in around 52-54 mpg

^Thats a good lookin son of a gun. Whats the cost & source & how would you "grade" the result of the drilled brake disk? Was it worth it? Pricey? Hard? I can see the stainless steel braid brake line coming soon to a bike near me.If it's not too big of a deal the drilled rotor might just happen then, too.

It is a EBC #3017LS rotor runs about $150, very easy to install if you have a jack or make one of the wood 2x4 lifts. I could feel some burrs left on the drill holes, needed to clean them up a little with sand paper - it works better how much is hard to tell as I did the stainless brake line and ceramic pads as well. on this bike the s/s brake line made the most difference as the old one was getting a bit soft.

Cool, thanks. I have a new set if ebc poads for it already, & the ones on it aren't half gone. When I need to get to a wheel I tie on with some soft rope & use a come along hooked to a storage shelf in the garage to raise either end off the ground. I guess I will just toss the SS line on it & see if the brake is good enough or if I need to chuck more $$ at it. Where do ya get the ceramic brake pads? All I can find are $30.00 EBC's.

Made by SBS - sbs 581hf - seems to me they are a little harder on the rotor but I didn't mic it before - the EBC organics work well

The UFO only works in Mikuni VM model carburetors.


The UFO is made for Mikuni VM model carbs, not the stock carb on the Savage.
The slide on the stock carb is vacuum operated, while the slide in the VM carb is cable actuated.

The design and function of the two types of carburetors are dramatically different.

If you made a similar device for the stock carb the weight of it would change the response of the slide to the vacuum system in the carb...you would have to re-engineer the carb to make it work.

It is much cheaper and a world easier to buy a VM carb set up and ready to go.

I saw that when I went into the carb & did the jet. I was looking at the slide & saw it is built w/o the hole in the bottom. I didn't know the carb slide the UFO goes on was cable actuated tho, & I also didn't realize the vacuum operated slide can't be messed with or it will get the carb out of whack.

Question I have is, how much should a guy put into these carbs? Is there a simpler one out there that works better in terms of power created? What about the MPG?

I use and sell the Mikuni VM 36mm carb, which I use on my Savage.  It has both the UFO and Dial-a-jet devices installed, but the carb can be used quite effectively without the devices.  I am a tinkerer ... always playing with the thing to see what I can do to improve power & responsiveness.

A stock carb can be rejetted, with or without a filter change  like a K&N type item, and you will improve the power and responsiveness noticeably.  The cost for a pilot and main jet is only about $3 each, and the white spacer mod is free if you do it yourself.  Depending on the filter you may choose, the entire thing can be done for $25-60.
Of course, any time you modify an engine to make more power, you may loose a little in the mpg area ... but not always.  My engine is modified a fair amount, making up to 45 hp on one of the last tests I did with it before beginning the current rebuild.  When my Savage was stock the milage was 52 mpg ... recent milage was 48 mpg.   That is the average for basic riding.  Really hard riding yielded as low as 40 mpg (wide open all the time doing test runs and such), while cruising the hiway would go up to 50 mpg.  

Switching to a Mikuni VM carb with stock or pod filter and HD or Supertrapp muffler for ex. will produce a big boost in power and responsiveness, with little loss in milage for easy riding.
This is assuming that the final jetting/fine tuning is done well so that the fuel/air mixture is proper.  Too lean or rich and it can create problems and loss of milage.
