S40 Seat Bolts
10/25/06 at 13:56:31

Not to take up much time and space,  anyone knows what size the two side bolts are for the seat of a 2006 S40?  I know they take 10MM socket, I think.  Lost one of mine someplace on the road after I put on a Willie and Max Hooker.  Guess I didn't tighten that one down enough.

My seat bolt on one side is stripped.  We already re-threaded it, but it stripped again the last time I put it in.
Guess I have to either leave it stipped, or thread a larger hole once more.  Hmfpt!!!

Both mine stripped,I just left them in ,finnaly today I took the seat off and tapped them both out to a 1/4 inch,
I cut a screwdriver slot in the bold heads,it seems to make it easier to get them on & off,you have to take the seat off for just about every maintanance chore you do,so I made it as easy as I could.

I'm thinking of replacing them with speed pins I used to use on my sail boat.  I've had the seat off so many times since I got it to warrant it.

I've often considered something like that myself.

Thanks Mick - I'll try to thread it larger than.

Verslagen1:  What exactly are speed pins?  I've done a lot of boating, but don't remember anything called that.

You're right though, that we have to take the seat off an awful lot.  I was trying to think of something else to secure the seat, that was easy to take on and off too.

It seems like this is a common problem with the S40s since, yes, you do have to remove the seat for just about everything.  I think I may tap them to a slightly larger size as Diana mentioned, and replace the bolts with a stainless bolt. Smiley

I've thought about getting longer bolts and jamming two nuts on the threads at the location of the head of the stock bolt.  At least the bolt would be more accessible that way.

That also sounds like a good idea.  It can be a pain in the you know what getting at the bolts.

Maybe the reference to "speed pins" up this thread is what this site shows as "quick pins"

http://www.bosunsupplies.com/products2.cfm?product=QRPinSuncor

A pull ring on one end and little spring loaded balls on the other end to hold the pin in. Seems like the short 1/4" one would adapt pretty good; stay in, and make the seat really easy to pull.

It might be a good solution, particularly  if the threads are stripped. It looks like the pin would have to be a close fit, though, unless the ball protruds
