Trouble with cold start.
10/13/06 at 08:37:37
We're getting our first overnight frosts here in Missouri and thumper doesn't want to cold start in the morning. This will be my first winter with the ol' girl and I'm at a loss how to coax her into starting in the cold. I push the ignition and she tries to turn over...I try the choke in....I try the choke out...after a while I just get clicking noises and nothing else. Does my battery need to be replaced? I've never had a problem starting her in weather over 32F. I don't have the luxury of a heated garage or anything, so that's out. I guess I could invite Suzi into bed with me but my girlfriend would probably reject that idea. Although I've always dreamed of..... Nah.
Thanks.

Welcome aboard Chris! Sounds like you need a new battery ... someone on here recently mentioned a battery that they recently bought that offered more cranking amps that the standard m/c battery ... maybe they'll chime in with a recommendation. An investment in a battery tender prolly wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I like my Odyssey but I've heard several others recently who've bought the "Big Crank" brand. Both are AGM.

I'm just going to ring in with others... I put a "Big Crank" in place of a failing battery about a week ago. Great battery. I even worked on my wiring and had the lights off and on for a couple of hours before starting it the first time with the new battery. Got my lights sorted out, and the Savage cranked right up. No charging, nothing... pull the choke; push the start button and Vroom! Just the way it oughta be. No maintenance and no leaking acid too. Best money I've spent on the Savage yet I think.

I installed a Big Crank and no more problems.
No push starting on cold mornings.
Before, my VR1 would shut down with every start.
Now it doesn't even wink.

when my newish AGM battery (came with bike) dies will certainly buy big crank, but also will recommend a battery tender - have one & keeps bike nicely charged.

Hi Rob
What model of the Odyssey battery did you put in your bike? Did you have to cut some edges of to get it in place?

I used the PC545MJ. It's wider and shorter than the stock battery. I bent a small piece of aluminum to act as a platform to raise the battery and I removed the tool pouch holder to accommodate the width.

bought a big crank last week. Other than the modification on the battery connections its a great battery.

Opportunities multiply as they are seized.
No spacer,60 pilot jet, 155 main jet, plug door, sportster muffler, k&n drop in, iridium plug, brake pedal mod,de-badged, Dunlops, bullet turn signals.

Sure is a good battery even though I'm not sure what the "electrolyte stuff" inside is like.
What did you have to modify?
