OH that Savage Sound!

Got my HD Screaming Eagle turnout pipe installed today.  OH MY GOD!  Is it a head turner!  Oh yeah, I'm riding with the Big Boys now!  [picture me doing cool dance]

So, can you tell I like it?  Grin

When I took it for a test ride it was like a new bike!  I swear it goes faster with that pipe on it.  I was getting head turns from the Harley boys...thumbs up as I went by.  It feels good to be BAD!  If you haven't upgraded your muffler, you have got to.   But I warn you, this pipe is LOUD.  If you don't want loud (like..go deaf after a long ride loud), then don't do it.  However, ear plugs are cheap.    Wink

The upgrade was not hard.  Bought the kit from ebay (if whoever sells it is on the site...I kiss your feet..smack!).  The instructions were very clear with pictures, but really not the necessary.  Taking the old muffler off was the hard part.  Putting the new one on was very easy.  I didn't bend the tab as recommended (which seemed very hard to do).  Instead I bought a wrap around muffler hanging kit at the auto store (2 bolts and wrap metal strip with holes in it).  I wrapped it around muffler hanger and stuck the bolt two holes at the right length, and cut the remander off with my drimmel.  Simple and doesn't look out of place.

So now my Savage has a Sportster seat (with the emblem on the back), and a HD turnout pipe (with the HD logo on the pipe), and no Suzuki emblems on it anywhere (getting it ready for painting).  I wonder if people will be confused seeing what looks like a one-lung "Harley"!  I kinda feel like the old Johny Cash song about the pieced together Caddy.  "Hey, dude...what IS that thing"   Grin

Carb is modded and the new 155 jet is on the way.  Have the pilot backed out 4 turns, but still popping on every shift.  Wouldn't a K&N give it more air and make it run more lean?  It's way to lean as it is now.  Would a 155 jet give me enough fuel to add a K&N?

Hold up there pardner, you are riding dangerously with the pilot screw out 4 turns...it could fall out.  Get the next larger size pilot jet and readjust the pilot air screw.  You never want to go over 3 turns out.  Ideally, shoot for 1.5-2 turns out when you have it running best.

Lancer, help please.  What size jet's (main & pilot) should I be running with this exhaust and a stock air filter?  I have a 155 main jet that should be here tomorrow.  Do I need a 55 pilot?

Thanks

As requested.

Wide shot

Closeup of muffler

The muffler/header connection.  New heat shield is on it's way.

The metal strapping kit, seen from under bike.  You can't see it from the side vew.

My studded HD sportster seat

Ok.  I'm out of my league when it comes to knowing what the pipe color means.  As you can see the pipe's already golding up.  The header's golding as well.  The blue was already there.  Does that mean lean or rich.  Haven't had time to pulled the plugs yet.  Only run the bike about 30 minutes with the new pipes on it.  Any help greatly appreciated for this wanna-be motorcycle mechanic.  Grin

the pops on upshift are air leaks in either the exhaust or airboot connections. Is your header bolts tight and is the gasket in the proper position??

nice looking mods. I also applaud your ability for absract thought with the exhaust hanger, inexpensive and useful.

I'm getting a exhaust leak around the header/muffler connection.  Didn't push the muffler on far enough to cover the cuts.

The popping happens when I drop the throttle.  Mostly popping, occasional backfire.  Can I ask again which jet(s) I need to upsize, main, pilot or both?

Thanks.
