Kickstarting for an S40?

Does anyone know if it's possible to bolt up a kickstarter from a DR650 or some such to an S40?

I really miss kickstarting.  It's so anticlimactic to gear up, throw a leg over your bike, and then push a button... Embarrassed

Its been discussed in the group before. Do a search and read the thread. The consensus was that suzuki did make a kit for kick start for the ls650. It was expensive, at around $2000. That it would be difficult and possibly cause you injury depending on if you kicked it off at other than TDC. I do understand how you feel. My previous bike was electric and kick start and I always kicked it off. I do believe is says your bike is well maintained and tuned up if you can kick start it on the first try. I derived a great deal of pleasure kick starting my CB.

Hmmm....

Thanks guys.  I have to wonder why the kickstart kit would be so expensive.  I thought the ls650 was based on the dr650, and that was kickstart untill this year, and the dealer said they could put one on still.

Oh well.  I'm not spending that kind of money, so I guess i'll use the button until inspiration hits on a night when my friends are all available and we start cutting metal...

1990 DR 650SL kickstarter:

1997 LS 650PV savage starter motor:

it says "see note"  ??  can't find it yet...

I also looked at the "magnetos."  They look about the same, but who knows?  The prices ARE not the same... dr about $200 more.

Anyway,

The savage also has a starter clutch, with a 1-way gear (I believe), which I bet many old kick-only-folks would've appreciated.  Then mating it to the crank case may also be rather tricky... look at they way the savage's starter motor is buried in the crank case, esp the way it come "up" at the edge.

on a slightly related note, there must be soem way to search Bert Heise's old forum.  If I click on an old link I have, this one to bert's old forum, the proper page comes up...
so it iseems the info is still there... just not easily accesible.

link: http://www.heise-workstations.de/ls650/Fragen/messages/46260.html

so, if you start playing w/ that number at the end, you get different posts... I found one on the squeeky belt! Smiley

And who speaks (types) german?  Those dudes are doing all sorts of trick stuff w/ their savages!  maybe they know how to do it...
