New to Savage site with Muffler info and backfire?

Hello all!

My name is Carl and my wife is Dee.
The 95 Savage is her bike.
I am an Intruder Alert member with my 97 1400.

We purchased her bike and she said it needed to be louder!

I have read alot of your Muffler posts here.
I started with COMPLETELY opening up the stock exhaust and after a 20 mile ride I WANTED TO GET OFF THIS THING!!! SO darn LOUD IT HURT!!!

So I was told by some on Intruder board the Sporty muffler fit... OFF WE GO TO THE HARLEY STORE... found the HOG director had stock '02 sporty muffs and sold me one for $20. The '03 he had was actually a little too big for the pipe, '02 fit almost perfect.

The '02 is a straight through design like a glass pack, NO BAFFLES OR DIVERSION PLATES!

I bought the Harley band clamp to keep the install clean atthe connection with 2 wraps of muffler repair tape it fit and snugged right up! I didn't figure out how to mount to the stock bracket so... I cut off the Harley bracket and used a 3 inch hose clamp wrapped in a chrome exhaust heat shielding to keep it as pretty as possible. Let's not talk about the fact that the header started to leak at the head, had to drive 60 miles to the dealer for a gasket that cost under $4, broke both studs and had to drill them out to a 3/8 car type stud!

NOW i have a HUGE popping that is as loud a pistol going off when I shift or decell!!

The carb is stock jetted (I took it completely apart and cleaned it out as it had sat for a while when we bought it and was cloggin up as I rode!).
What is the size of the jet?
Will a jet from my 1400 Factory Pro kit fit?
HOW do I get rid of this POP?
The exhaust seems to be running very rich as the black smoke on the rear brake linkage indicates (exhaust dumps right onto the linkage and the drum area)?

IF as some posts suggest... the pop is from a rich condition when slamming throttle plates shut then how does richening it up help? Why would I want to give it MORE fuel to POP even louder with?

Here is a link to the thread on my work for the exhaust

hope to talk to you all more as we get this bike straightened out for her!
This is a fun little machine! Very agile, nimble, and stable! Only gets 80-90 MPH though!
85 is all I could get on the stock muffler.
Reached 90 on the stock gutted muffler!
Seems to have lost a little top end when I put the Sporty pipe on it? not sure yet just seemed to peter out about 80-85.

All your answers can be found on this board. Do a search for Harley muffler, white spacer, and jetting.

In short, when you open up your exhaust by drilling your baffles or adding a freer flowing muffler, you need to rejet the carb.

With a free flowing Harley muffler, I would think a 155 main jet, 1/2 white spacer, and turn out your slow mixture screw a bit.

The main jet is a large round Mikuni jet. I doubt your 1400 has a Mikuni on it.

Welcome to the site and have fun with your mods. Your user name reminds me of a character on PeeWee's Funhouse  Grin Wink

welcome to savage land! where do y'all call home?  my wife rides the savage, i have an '84 HD. when i brought her bike home, it was about as yours seems to be. we also went with the straight thru harley pipe. the air filter did not appear to be dirty, but i replaced it and swiss cheesed the air box door, and then proceeded with the jetting mods. our bike had sat for a while too, and the enrichening circuit(accelerator pump) was sticky, and caused a very bad running condition. i promise when your done, it WILL exceed 80 mph Grin rear tire wear may become the next problem Wink

I'd also recommend a 55 pilot jet as that and the needle jet are the main ones used when riding. As you have read this bike comes from the factory restricted and lean to meet epa standards. If your handy with a wrench as it appears you are, you can acomplish the mods in one afternoon and then tweak the carb for fine tuning. I run a sportster slash cut muffler with a single baffle. My set up is as follow. K&N air filter. No spacer, 155 main, 55 pilot. The tank is a bit of a struggle to remove the first time but its covered in depth in the tech sections. The carbs screws are soft junk and you should get some SS allen bolts and replace them. You can loosen the carb at the air boots and pivot it to gain access to the top and bottom. I have limited wrenching experience and achieved several mods in one day. I still have an occasional fart on decel but its just the nature of the big  single. Take the time to do some research on the site. Many will respond if you take the time to ask. Good luck and BTW, its a great bike.

Soot and smoke with loud pop was due to a sticking and wrongly adjusted float!

The thing got stuck today and was flooding the couple days!

Took off the bowl and adjusted it.
It apparently has the stock jet as it is a 145.
They look like the same jets as in my Factory Pro kit from my 1400 Intruder. Have to ride for a day or 2 with proper float height THEN will go with bigger jet.

Need to see what it does for top speed with the carb not flooding first!

THANK YOU ALL for the welcome and the advice!
