New S40- what should I do to it?
08/27/06 at 22:16:55
Hey all, I just bought a new S40 and have been lurking around this site reading all the great stuff you guys are sharing. It seems like most everyone has made some mods to their bikes here, and I'm wondering what you all think I might want to do to mine.
It's a good running bike, only backfires when I shut it off. How long do you run with the choke on after starting? The salesman said shut the choke off after a minute or two, but unless it's all the way hot, it runs a lot better and smoother with the choke out half way. (I'm guessing this is where everyone insists on the spacer mod)
Also, the sound is fine with me- I work nights and don't want to wake the nighbors. Since i'm keeping the stock exhaust, how much benefit would I get from fiddling with jets and all?
Thanks

As you know that the carb on S40 have 145 main jet; if you go up to 150 or 152.5 then the backfiring would be subdued and you might have to adjusts the famous air mixture screw--meaning getting rid of the brass plug before you can touch that. Other than that I wouldn't do any mod until your warranty is up
Welcome aboard and have fun tinkering this bike

The bike runs better with the choke 1/2 out because the carb is set so lean. Prime example of why the spacer mod is done. While I agree with SavageDude on
what
to do, I think you should wait till after you get the first service done before tinkering. JMO

Don't do anything to it right now other than ride it. Get to know the bike, know what it does/doesn't do, will/won't do, how it runs/doesn't run.
Yeah, we've done the mods, but there's no rush to do them. SavageDude has a point on the warranty thing though.
Start eyeballing your saddlebags, windshields and stuff like that.

+1 on ride it. After first complete tune up, ride it some more, and then think about tinkering.

Ride it. Love it. Learn what you want to get from it. Perhaps wait for the warranty to run out. At that point...turn it into what you want it to be.
There's no rush on making any mods. Take the time to learn the bike, it's quirks, and what you want to change first. Then comes mods.

Thanks
I am feeling a theme running through this thread, and I am riding, honest! I don't understand why there are ever any bikes for sale that are two years old with only 400 miles on them. If you didn't want to ride it, why'd you buy it?
I'm a little concerned about hurting the engine by running too lean though. Is that a real concern or not really a problem? Also, does anyone know of a flyscreen sized windshield for these?
Thanks again. Ain't these great bikes?

Running it stock for a while won't cause your engine to blow up or anything like that. While it's certainly jetted more lean than ideal, I don't think there'd be any negative side effects from riding it stock. Mine remained that way for over a year, with nothing bad occuring because of it. I wouldn't worry about it.
I believe National Cycle makes a flyscreen. I don't have one though, so I'll let someone who does chime in on that.

I second that
You get a laugh out of people's reaction when the Savage fart. For the first 600 miles, I had lots of laugh with the backfiring from bone-stocked S40. Ride and ride with a smile. 8)
p.s. I do have the NC flyscreen installed. I love it more than my windscreen because of its simplicity and effectiveness--look good and keep wind pressure off the chest on high speed run. Check my ride out
