Anyone installed a tach?
08/25/06 at 19:28:00
Has anyone out there installed a tach on the Savage? (I have a '96)
I'm looking at the ones J.C. Whitney sells for around $40 that look to be electrically connected somewhere/to something (off the spark plug cable somehow or what?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated
George

in a related vein, I'd like to remove the instruement cluster from the tank, with a pod set up on the top of the tripple tree or handlebars. Then I'd have a place for my coffee. Or could the space be filled in to increase fuel capacity.. Anyone seen either of these types of mod's in their travels? Related cause I'd like either a speedo/tach combo on the bars, rather than on the tank. georgekathe- not intending to hijack your thread, I think these are related ?'s. If not, MODERATOR, please split this off, thank you.

no, mine is really much more simple - I wantr to leave evereything as it is & just bolt on a bolt-on tach in the middle of the handlebars.
the instrument cluster stays as is, so I see these as being two issues, not really related - mine is a simple anyone fitted such a tach & if so, how?
thanks, George

Th tachs that JC Whitney sells for 40 bucks are mechanical, won't work on our Savage, needs an electronic type for dual fire ignitions.

i've said it before, i'll say it again.
we don't need no stinking tach's on a single
sure they look kewl, but in my humble opinion are totally unneeded.

You can read about it here... I start writing a little down the page

KLX will take full throttle from 2000 rpm, any of you Savage guys with tach's go lower than that ?

thanks for reply fat bastard. you too sluggo, but I even had a tach on the SR500 single I owned (iut came with same). agree hardly likely to redline Savage, but curious to see revs are in @ given time/speed/gear - got so used to it on other bikes after years of british iron & going over to jap or german with more instrumenmtation.
incidently, do you look like Warren Oates as well as quote him? (just curious...?)

(northern tool tach)i have a similar one from pit possee mounted on the bars next to the brake reservoir..read out it kinda small
pick up work by induction, wrap the wire around the plug wire a few times (coil) electronics are not the greatest so theres a slight delay .. i use it mainly for idle
speed monitoring ,long stop lites @ too slow idle in the
summer makes for hot oil.for some reason bike idles faster in the cool hours(denser air?) than in the heat of the day...

I've been using one of thoses tachs for over a year, just wrap the pickup around the plug wire and hook up the ground. I mounted it on the left handle bar with black ty wraps. So far I like it, helps keep track of shift points and rpm on the superslab. The one I'm using has a self contained battey, once it is dead you toss the whole tach and get another one.

Moderators do not have the capability to "split" a thread. You basically need to copy your post and paste it into a new topic, then delete your original post if desired.

There you go again:
Riders view
Oncommers view
Now I have to get rid of the OEM speedometer, close the hole in the tank and find a place for the Neutral light ( or not)
Installation as previously described.

No, that's Bert's HD Roadking Classic with sooooo much chrome on it you could buy 2 Savages or S40 for it.
