new bike= runnig problems
08/19/06 at 21:44:23

Hello all, I just bought a 1995 savage 650 and it had been sitting for about 4yrs. So i took the carb off and cleaned the whole thing, cleaned the tank, new plug. Put it back on and it will sit there and idle all day but as soon as you rap it it falls flat on its face like its starving. I took the the petcock apart and the o-ring was almost melted like and gummed up. so i put a new o-ring on. And yes the vacuum line is hooked up also. it seems to run better if i mess with the choke also, so I think it might be a fuel delivery problem but the bowl fills up fine?Any help would be great .. p.s. the bike is all stock  Thanks

sounds like the carb - is the slide clean and moves freely as well as the diaphram has no holes and the spring is in straight?

on the right side of the carb, is 3 screws that hold the accelerator pump(enrichening valve), if that is gummed up, it will cause that type of problem.

Sorry it took so long to get back on here. Finally had some time to work on the bike again, cleaned the carb again everything inside, now its as clean as a whistle. Put a new petcock on it. And still the same problem stills spudders and what-not above half throttle. I'm at a loss here any help would be great. Thanks

I don't know how you clean your carb! Did you take it all apart and soak all the major component overnight. Being sitting for 4 years without running, I think most of the o-ring and rubbery part inside the carb are shot. I don't have 1st hand experience on this bike but when I rebuilt my car's carb, I took everything apart piece by piece to inspect and clean. I know this is along drawn process, but to find the problem you have is difficult and iffy; so it is better off to tear the thing apart and rebuilt it. If you are mechanical inclined and with the proper break-down figure of the carb from either the Clymer manual or Bikebandit.com, you can do it.

Good luck in tinkering

you didn't mention replacing fuel, can we assume you drained the 4 yr old fuel and have a fresh load of premium on board? did you remove the enrichening valve while cleaning? fresh spark plug? new air filter?

Savagedudes right. You need to disassemble your carb and soak it in some real carb cleaner. There is gunk in the passages that you can't even see. Carb cleaner in the spray can won't cut it.

Run an inline fuel filter too. Any junk remaining in the tank and fuel lines will clog your jets in a short time.

Make it a clear one.  It's nice to be able to see if it's got crud trapped in it and/or to see if fuel is flowing.  The one I use is similar to the one at the top of the image.

my hubby & grandson swear by putting a little bit of Sta-Bil in the tank when they have trouble after it has set up. They do this on their boat motors, chain saws , other engines. Don't know if that would help clean the works out, what do you all think?
