changed to xenon blew main fuse
07/19/06 at 15:08:51

Last week I changed out my bulb to the xenon Quartz XQ H4WPK Cyber white by Navigator that I had seen reccommended on here earlier.  Today the main fuse blew.  Hmmm.  Do you think there is any correlation?  Did I get the wrong bulb?

There are two ways it could be related: First, the wattage of the new bulb is higher than the replacement. Second, a wire may have been pinched when the headlight face was put back on.

Absolutely DON'T try wrapping foil around the fuse. I know from experience that a wiring harness can go up in smoke at the speed of light.

my xeon is 55/60 watt which matches stock ..ive seen xenons  @90/100 and higher...ohms law tells us ... 20amps(fuse size) X 12 volts = 240 watts
the following  figures are from my 06 owners manual:
front running lights 5watts X2                           10
taillight 5watts                                                     5
brake light 21 watts                                           21
turn signal  21watts X2                                      42
license plate 8watts                                             8
speedo  3 watts                                                   3
turn indicator 1.7watts                                          1.7

total wattage without head lamp while braking
for a turn                                                                 90.7

that leaves < 150 watts
this does not account for the surging of the turn signals and  brake light or any electrical accessories ...hopefully its a pinched wire and not an over sized bulb...
p.s.  is the head lamp housing, lens, reflector, are plastic
melt down may occur...

The wattage of the new bulb  is 60/55 12 volt

I think I pinched a wire.  Will work on this week-end.  It is so hard to get the screws lined up correctly when putting the cover back on.  Have skwunch my face up to get it to fit.

That's normal.  Yeah, look for the short.

When I changed my light, I went through 3 fuses before I found the short.

I have run a 90/100 Xenon for two years with no problem.  Good hunting.

Do you have to special order those 90/100's?  All the auto parts stores around here carry is the standard stuff seems like.

Island Biker,

You changed your whole headlight out didn't you?  Did you ever figure out what kind it was and the wattage requirements?

Don't know the wattage, but it's a Jute Halogen. $55 CDN at the local Harley shop.
