Gear/Clutch acts like KILL SWITCH!? Help!
06/25/06 at 22:49:54

Hi all.  Please help.

Everytime I shift it in to gear the engine DIES for no good reason (while holding the clutch down).
In other words, the machine cannot be running while in gear.

Here´s the story...Just bought a savage, 97, black, 4,000 Mi, good shape, good deal.

Anyway, today I took it apart for the first time, BASIC SERVICE, and did an oil / filters / spark plug / cleaned carb+white spacer mod / drilled holes in air box & adjusted clutch cable cause it was a bit lose.

Put it back together and turned right on, purrrs better than ever, very strong,  backfire gone.
But now it doesn´t go ???

(Something like what happens when a kid tries for the first time to drive a car with gears).

I thought it was the clutch cable so I adjusted it back and forward but no luck. Cable is still good, pulls all the way.

Shifting now somehow acts like a kill swich, no clue.

Could I had forgotten to connect something?
Electric?
Clutch gone?

Please help.

Thanks in advance Grin

Very common problem with a very simple solution. Go get your diagonal cutter, a zip-tie and a wire nut. Take a look at your kickstand and you will find two wires. Cut them and strip the ends on the frame side of the bike. Twist together, install wire nut. Zip-tie to bike frame.

End of problem.

Savage kickstand kill switches are notoriously cheesy little pieces of failure prone garbage. And you do not need it anyway. Just check to make sure the bike rolls before starting it. You can "fix" the clutch interlock switch the exact same way if need be or you just want to. Then you can start without pulling in the clutch.

Got it, got it.

I kinda had the feeling it was something electrical, not mechanical but I couldn´t quite figure it out.

Right! ...the darn kick stand has a kill switch, duh.

I must have damaged the switch while placing the bike on my tool box.

Thanks a TON WD!

I´ll get up early and give it a try and I´ll tell you how it went.

Yup, that was it.

Thanx WD, I owe you one.

I'm new to this forum and I find it great, very helpful, well organized and the people here are really nice, keep it up!

Cheers.

No worries and you're welcome. I picked it up from a guy named Russ, Hoggryder on the old Heise Savage forum. Your switch failed right on schedule mileage-wise, a bit late age-wise.

Yeah, most of us are alright. I tend to get a bit grumpy, OK, short tempered, OK, downright evil at times. I've been in the bike scene so long I tend to forget what it was like being new to it. It doesn't help that I work in a bike shop and used to be a professional customiser.

Hahahahahaha!!!!!!

LOL

You seem pretty nice to me, you big softy.

We´ve all got our story, but the fact remanis
that most of us are in to this because it´s cheaper
than a shrink as an "anti-stress therapy solution"
from real world ware and tare, there is nothing
like wind hitting hour face, zooming though traffic
jams and than thumping in your spine as you give it gas.

Thump,      Thump,    Thump,  Thump, Thump,Thump...

Take care all.
