(Goes for any bike, I suppose, but since this is a Savage forum, we'll use the Savage as a reference .) What is it that defines a bike as a certain model?

I think that it would have to have a Savage engine and a Savage VIN (for the USA that's: vehicle identification number) to be called a Savage. However with that said, the engine is the overriding feature. I suppose even a shaft or chain drive would be a (very) custom Savage with the correct engine.

Edit: I've noticed that even when manufacturers come out with a new model based on a previous models engine, the new model is often referred to as being based on a previous model.

As said the 652cc (or the 400cc available in certain global markets) single cylinder powerplant is the defining characteristic.

Vroom, I can't see where your savage would feel like anyones savage. I really love the way your bike looks but I will most definetly not be doing your seat mod on mine. Grin

yeah that's pretty silly. My pal chuck has owned a '47 pan since 1970. About three years ago the original engine finally quit. Just too much wrong with it... He still has the original engine in his living room, but he replaced the engine w/ an S&S replica. Looks original except for the S&S engraving. Even has the same oil leaks and various problems. Is it still a 47 pan? Close enough. Cheesy

A Savage is no longer a Savage if it's crushed into scrap;
having a Savage (not scrap) is a good thing.
A Savage with creature comfort modifications is a more comfortable Savage;
having a more comfortable Savage is a good thing.
A Savage with performance enhancing modifications is a more savage Savage;
having a more savage Savage is a good thing.
A Savage on a custom frame and totaly done up is a custom Savage;
having a custom Savage is a good thing.
If it was born a savage - it is a savage.

As for someone putting an S&S engine on a custom frame and calling it a Harley....I don't get it....anything you build around a factory or custom S&S engine deserves more respect.
