Backfire on shutoff.
06/01/06 at 13:19:03

Hi all I have a 1987 Savage with 29400 miles on her.  Every time I shut her off she backfires.  Some times it is a bang and others it is just a little puttt.  Timing is checking good, any other ideas?
Thanks

should post in rubber-side down this is a how-to section. anyhow what do you have on your bike stock carb and exhaust? the bike runs real lean do a search on how to take care of that. in the mean time when you go to shut off your bike let it idle a minute or so then turn off with the key instead of the on/off switch.

I have had success with leaving the bike in gear, and letting out the clutch slightly so some pressure is on the drive train, and hitting the kill switch.

A trick I learned in an earlier post.

Hi!  I am so used to the loud bang on shut off, that the other day when I was riding my ATV, and I shut it off anticipating a bang, and it didn't backfire - I was surprised - until I realized I wasn't sitting on my bike(lol).

My bike is in the shop getting some new tires, and I've asked them to check the jetting etc.  Figured I wasn't quite up to doing the carb mods myself yet. Grin

Search the site for the carb modification.  I did mine yesterday and only takes a couple of hours.  The putt's come when moter is 'cool', the bangs come after it's hot or thats the way mine was.  When you have the tank off put a fresh plug in.

My bike would backfire  when shutting off ,until I lowered the idle a little, now it's usually fine. Don't lower it too much.
