blue pipe cleaning

I was reading a post from a few thousand back...Whew!...about blue removal and someone said "Blue Job" is made from aluminum oxide powder and crushed walnuts 40to1.  They checked it out from the patent.  If this is so, it is simply an abrasive compound, no magic there.
Another said he used the stuff with 0000#steel wool as an applicator.
Mine is blue going to black from a plugged pilot jet a while ago and now after cleaning and rejet I'd like to get her back to shiny.
Hate to spend nearly $20 for 2oz. of the cleaner if I don't have to.
Has anyone tried 0000# steel wool with comet or vim or whatever?  Any other mild abrasives?
I have cleaned my chaingaurd with steel wool and it worked o.k.
Any opinions?
