I did 5 (FIVE) mods today!! (with photos)
05/20/06 at 13:44:20

Yes!! I DID it! I did not one, not two but FIVE mods today. Short description follows.

Today I did the following modifications:
1. Denso platinum spark plug
2. Spark plug door
3. Pod style air filter
4. Main jet from 132.5 to 137.5
5. 1/2 white spacer

It took 5 hours. This was the first time I dismantled the bike, except the seat mod I did earlier. I removed the seat,  the fuel tank (it came off easily) and the battery wit the box.
I had some trouble with the top of the carb because the screws weren't move. WD40 and gentle hammer hits solved2 of them but I had to drill out the 2 other  Undecided
Later I replaced all with hex (allen) type ones.
The spark plug door thingy works well but I will have to put something instead of the backside screw because the door knock a little the engine.
I was so tired I tried the settings only for 10 minutes. Tomorrow I will ride it for a little more time.

Photos to come...

Top chop work. You can see my homemade bike lifter.

Spark plug door. I will put something in to end the noise. The infamous oil leak is there too  Sad

Denso platinum spark plug.

The new air filter. I love the sound as it sucks the air in when I pull gas!

The white spacer before filing.

The white spacer after filing.

The carb needle. There are 3 positions on it, what are they for?

I found this plug under the tank. What is this for?

And this?

After all the work was done I fired up the bike. It wasn't starting that easy since everything was out and then been put back. After 3-4 ignitions something boomed a loud and the pod filter coughed back some gasoline.  Finally the engine started and the bike had some great sound!! Yahhhhooooooo!! Then I took out the bike for a short ride (oops, without helmet, jacket...). It had very cool sound I mean much more sharp as before. As I give gas the air filter sucks in the air and it gives a cool sound too  Wink
One more thing: the bike NEVER backfired after stopping the engine!

So that is all for today. I am very proud of myself however I am not used to be.  8)

I think the plug is for the decompression solenoid (which looks like it is missing from your bike) If it's hard on the battery to start that will be the reason. I know because my solenoid controller is shot.

I like the look of the denso I might get that myself.

And you need a big can of degreaser to clean that puppy up.

Shocked

Lion, you've made a mistake in your carb tuning. You should not have filed your spacer. In the 7th picture you show the adjustable needle and ask "what is that for ?" The simple answer is by moving the clip from the 2nd position to the bottom position that would  assimilate filling your spacer. Most of the owners on this board do not have an adjustable clip, so the spacer mod is common advise that unfortunately is not good for you.

Grin Today I had it washed. But the top of the engine remains as it was...

Oops... What do you advise then? Replace the spacer?
Because the bike runs like hell. Read my following message.

Today I went out for a little ride. Oh my goodness, IT KICKS A$$!
It is a totally different bike now! When I give gas I feel the bike pulls me. Even when the throttle is at about 3/4. Not to mention the sound! It is LOUD and the rattling is like it had come to life.
I was enjoying it a lot, I couldn't stop not to give gas.

The 2 plugs are
1 the decompression solenoid
2 the controller of the decompresion solenoid

The plug with the 6 connectors has 2 of them connected to make the ignition circuit working.

The decompression solenoid and the controller are completely missing from your bike.

What year is the bike and is it a 652 CC or a 396CC??

It is a 396CC from 1996 (as it is in my signature  Wink).

What on earth is a decompression solenoid? What is it good for? (And why don't I have one...)

No, it is this:

Bottom right corner.

I oiled it with K&N airfilter oil.

I didn't realize it was the 396, it may not need the decomp. solenoid, but still use the same wire harness would be my guess. (Lion the decomp. solenoid lets out cylinder pressure on start-up to make it easier on the starting system, but being a smaller cylinder it probably doesn't require it.

Thanks for the info. Should put it in the tech docs (maybe it is there somewhere).
