6199.4 Forever?
05/08/06 at 16:37:47

That was the mileage when the speedo stopped reporting on the way home from work today.  Disconnected it at the motor end and the cable just pulled right out - obviously broken off at the instrument end.  Before I head off to Bike Bandit, I'd like The Collective to weigh in.  Do I need to order anything beyond the cable?  Any surprises in store for me when I install the cable?  I've had the tank off and done the usual mods already, so I'm not too worried about it - except for the PITA factor.

Yeah, I know, at least the speedo buzz has been cured Smiley

For the  price of a speedo cable, you can get a Sigma bicycle computer. It is a substantial upgrade over the Flintstone Savage speedometer. See the technical section.

Let me get this straight. The whole cable fell into your hands or just the inner cable part? the inner cable will slide out of the sheath no problem. If the cable has snapped off the back of the speedo housing you may need mare than just a cable. Have you pulled the tank yet? A speedo cable should last much longer than 6200 miles should it not?

Good responses so far - I appreciate it.

The inside cable just came right out - no tugging or twisting on my part.  The instrument end appears to have just broke off, but I'm going to take a closer look (maybe even with glasses on).  Could it have simply worked itself free, and isn't really broken?  I know I shouldn't conclude anything without pulling the tank.  Didn't want to pull the tank until I was ready to make the repair, if possible.  I need the bike to travel to work, car isn't an option for a week or so (2 kids just came home from college, one car just went down with bad wheel bearing...etc. etc.) so I just don't want to pull and reinstall without a pretty good chance of solving the problem the 1st time.  That's why I'm looking for thoughts/experiences.  I hate pulling the darn tank.  The petthing always gets hung up.  Half the time I forget to disconnect the vacuum line.  The other half of the time, I forget to reconnect it.  Always a battle to get the front part of the tank to seat on to the round knobs.  End of tank rant.....sorry.....  Given my tank pulling incompetence, here's another piece of data...When I pulled the tank in mid-winter to adjust the valves, on the 1st try, I failed to loosen the speedo cable.  I don't think I pulled hard enough to strain the connection, but that's a pretty subjective and self-serving analysis.  Thanks for helping me think through this before ripping stuff apart.  I agree, 6,200 miles is way too early for this king of failure.  Now that I've given a bit more information, any other comments would be great.

Mine broke down at the engine end.  The little shaped pin that goes into the "I don't know what it's called, but there's only one orientation it will fit thing" snapped off.  If I recall properly, the inner cable can slide out.

occasionally, the instrument end would simply come loose and had to be re tightened.

that pin snapped around 23k miles.

I just pulled my inside metal speedometer cable out and measured it. It measures 22 1/4 in. If yours is less than that, it must have fractured. Pay close attention to the speedo drive end, and note if there is any signs of it unwinding and having a burr.

Bentwheel - that measurement confirmed it.  I measured my cable and it is only 20 9/16" long.  The speedo end is rough, a burr is a decent description.

So, it definitely broke off, and I will proceed with a replacement.

Lancer - I'll take you up on your offer for the used cable.

Thanks for all the responses - you hear it all the time - but this is really an awesome group.

You might want to locate the missing piece too.

That's a good point, Rob.  Nothing else fell out when I pulled the cable.  I'm hoping it's still inserted at the speedo end.  Begs the question of what made it break in the first place.  I'll give an update when the replacement cable is installed.  I'm riding every day right now, and the bike is running normally, so I think this is a limited problem of a one-off nature.  We have several speed traps on my way to work and I'll admit I'm not comfortable with the status quo.

I just bought a poor quality, Made-in-China Harley reproduction tacho and speedo - the tacho plugging into the coil,no problem, but the sppedo requiring a cable extension.
I remember a thread discussing the issue and pointing to a website, but I can't find the one to find the other.

FWIW, I pulled my speedo cable at 5700 miles, cleaned it, greased it, and reinstalled it.

I plan to do this every 7500 miles.

Mike M - just kidding (note smiley face) & would not suggest being dishonest but if you didn't get it fixed & kept bike in good shape for 20 years think how much more desirable it'd be if you then sold it with such low mileage! Grin
