Recently did a valve adjustment. Afterward I heard more tapping than before, but have always heard "a tappy valve is a happy valve." However, even for a thumper, the bike used to have a throatier, manly, sound. Now, it's very much more treble. Is that to be expected? Will the sound deepen as the valves tighten up? Or is the change in sound totally unrelated?
And ideas?

Not really - correct set valves make a little tap'n but not very much.
are you real sure you got the clearence correct?
what do you mean by "as the valves tighten up" - on this engine they get looser not tighter over time like a shim'd valve.

1. I'm very sure the adjustment is correct.
2. On my inline 4 cylinder, the tappets tighten over time, I wasn't aware this engine was different. Dangit!
3. I'm wondering, I just added a windshield. Maybe that is routing the noise upward instead of dispersing it like before. Maybe it's all my imagination.
All I know is when I was testing it, my wife said "why does my bike sound like a girl?"
Argh! But at least the oil leak is gone.

The motor makes a different sound with windshield on and off , my experience.
And as general remark: was the engine at TDC in the compression stroke?
I use a feelergauge 0.005" for in- and exhaust, works for me.

It was either at TDC or BDC, LOL!!! I'm sure I had it right. It runs fine, just sounds funny.

Just adjusted the valves on my '02 and the exhaust note is definitely higher.

My S40 sounded a little different with the windshield on too. Might be that.

The only reason I mentioned TDCC (not TDC) is that the first time I adjusted mine, I had think I had it at TDC but not on the compression stroke as the existing gaps didn't seem right. Fortunately it was pointed out to me that it must be TDCC and I readjusted before running it. The only reason I hadn't run it by then was that I'd done the plug fix and snapped off a bolt and hadn't received its replacement yet. Anyway, as long as you're sure it was on the compression stroke, cool. I just thought I'd mention it.

I used the manual and lined up the mark as it showed. Should that be enough to get it TDCC?

That's not enough.

Absolutely.
I also liked the idea of using a piece of wooden dowel inserted into the sparkplug hole to help you see when the cylinder is rising and then aligning the timing mark in concert with that. I haven't done it yet but I plan to then next time I adjust the valves.
