Hello, I just got an '87 Savage yesterday off Ebay to replace a really bad Virago that was giving me problems. It's black, corroded, rough and backfires when I shut it off...perfect! I named it Uncle Fester.
So anyway, my friend managed to resurrect it from the brink of extinction. Lubed the cables, changed the black junk posing as oil, aired up the 12psi tires, replaced the perfectly black spark plug and rebuilt the ghetto-rigged ignition switch. "Ya gotta wiggle it a bit to turn it on". The flippin thing was inside out for cryin out loud. Battery was at 12.2v. The previous owner fabricated some saddlebag brackets out of flat bar aluminum and bolted the bags to them.
A couple questions, for now. First just how normal is the backfiring? Nothing quite like a loud gunshot every time you shut off the motor. Second, the mirrors are completely useless due to the engine vibrations. Any tips?
And the front spokes. I think there's more rust than spoke. Naval jelly or something? It goes quite nicely with the overall 'beast' look of the bike, but i'd still like them cleaned up some.
When I get the $$$ it'll get a lightning bolt paintjob on the tank to compliment the Fester theme.
Thanks Angie and Fester
