Macs Exhaust

I want to install a Macs pipe on my 05 S40. Any advice on the doing so?

Will I need to use the stock exhaust seal or does the Macs pipe come with a gasket?

Thanks
John

I just put one on mine, and the MAC muffs don't come with the gasket. I was able to remove the gasket from my OEM muff and reuse it. Be really careful when removing it, I used a pocketknife and lightly went around the edges and loosened the gasket and then gently pulled it out. Worked well, sealed just fine. Mine is an '02, but since yours is an '05 the gasket may come out even easier.

I have had a Mac and it was great. Sounded even better after Torque beat out the baffle hehe. I still got it.. just in case hehe.

I wouldnt reuse an exhaust gasket. They are pretty cheap and for the piece of mind I would go ahead and get a new one so u dont have to do it again in the near future.

Not at all trying to be argumentative, Jim, but the only reason I suggested the muffler gasket could be reused is because it doesn't retain fluids like other gaskets would, and it is a fairly simple setup.

Yeah, in a perfect world, its best to get a new gasket, but this is one of those areas that the gasket can be safely and successfully removed and reused with no ill effect on the bike whatsoever. In my case, my dealer is over 30 miles away, no local dealers stocked it, and I didn't want to go throught the hassle of ordering this one part and paying shipping costs online that amounted to more than the part itself, and I sure wasn't gonna pay the dealers price for the gasket! Cheesy

John, in short, I agree with Jim that it is probably best if you can plan ahead and get a new gasket, but you can rest safely in knowing that you can reuse that gasket so long as it is not torn as well. You'll find that in motorcycle ownership there are about as many opinions on a matter as there can be! Cheesy

I needed to use a new gasket. The old one was pretty boogered up by the time I got it out of the stock muffler.

I got mine from http://www.denniskirk.com. Their shipping is lightning fast and they are good to deal with.

I was all set to order mine from there, and then I stumbled across the one from Dennis Kirk. Lucky I did, as I saved about $25, if I remember right!

When I bought mine it was $100. Now it's $150. I guess they got proud.

Yeah, I think mine was around $120 with shipping. I did get the other style heat shield installed on it yesterday. Looks a lot better, and I hope it will make a difference with the discoloration I've been experiencing on the muffler.

Just ordered one from MotorCycleProShop -- $116.55 including Shipping, Handling, and $6.80 for The Governator.

I'll let you know in about a week what I think of it -- hopefully it'll be somewhat quieter than the fishtail that was setting off the new neighbor's car alarm. (I have the stock trashcan back on.)

I'll be running sans heatshield until I order the small one fron JC Whitney.

Just for information, I had been having discoloration problems on my MAC right at the end of the muffler where it connects to the header pipe, discoloring the length of the stock heat shield.

I ordered the smaller one as well, took the stock one off, used the Blue Away on it and then polished with simichrome, and knock on wood -- no more discoloration. I truly think that stock shield was really holding the heat up against the muffler.
