I did a search and seem to have a weird problem. I have had the bike do this twice, and I think it is in the kick-stand relay. I was pulling into a parking lot today and had shifted down, and when to accelerate and nothing. No power, no lights, nada.  I popped clutch and it restarted and I drove in and parked. I sat there for 20 minutes, went to restart and no power. Like the key wasn't even in the switch. Just absolutely nothing. I popped kick stand up and down, tried moving the key they different points, took key out, put it back, banged on the side of the battery, and nothing. At last after one severe popping kickstand into place I had temporary power.
Then nothing again. Up and down with kickstand, manually pushing on the kill switch in the kick stand. Still nothing. Had just about given up and it started and died immediately. It was like no power at all. I kept at the flipping kick stand up and down, rolling bike back and forth, in and out of gear, and putting kickstand up, and it tried to start. I tapped the kickstand up again and it fired right up.
Weirdest thing I have had happen. Any help anyone? Anyone got photos of underside of S-40? I found a red spring on the ground about a week after having bike on the floor jack. Don't know if it has anything to do with kickstand and switch of not,

Same thing happend to my 05 s40 and it was a connector under the tank

Well I took seat off and checked all connections and flat spots on cords, cables etc. The bike fired right up this morning then died, I kicked the front left peg and it came to life. This evening I went out, and zip. NO lights, nothing. Up and down with the kick stand. Kicked the peg and nothing. Just about to give up and lifted the edge of the left peg, and knocked it into placed and I had power. So somewhere in and around the kick stand and peg I have a loose connection, wire or somthing. But it kills the whole system. The kick stand switch just kills the engine and leaves the lights on. This is weird, as I said.
Might have to resort to going to the dealership.
I'll keep playing with it.
Anyone else with ideas?

Unless the bike is under a warrenty bypass the switch, it's a lot easier than replacing it and is one less thing that can give you trouble.

Tnx all. If it were the ignition switch, why does it start to work when I hit the end of the left drivers peg? And only that is what allows me full power to the system. The switch in the kickstand only kills the engine, not all the power (no lights, no speedo display etc).  I think there is a short some where in the area where the kick stand and the peg are. But I can't see any wires while on the ground looking under.
I came out from work today, very carefully lifted the kick stand, took bike out of gear, peaked the throttle, turned the key on, and I had power. I hit the start, and it turned over, but didn't start. I had full lights and instruments. I hit the starter button a second time and all power is now off. C... So I kicked the end of the peg and the beast came back on line. As I said this is the weirdest electrical problem I have chased down.
You know this is like the old Fords used to be. It wouldn't work at the house but the minute it gets to the shop it is working perfect.

I only have a floor jack, and the bike is under a 3 year warranty. So it goes back to the shop when I get back from vacation. Talk about frustrating. But at least I can get it started and it will run just fine, no matter what I do to the peg while in motion. I rolled into my spot at the house, got into neutral, and tried everything to kill the system, but it worked fine. So I think it is a short. And it might be from the kick stand just drawing so much current that the system shuts off.
But it sure is nice to ride just now!

Another day to and from work. When I started this morning I would swear I saw a spark below me on the left side of the bike. But just once. Then this evening when I went to start, it would not start, power up or anything. I popped all the spots that worked yesterday and then tried thumping the plate over the battery. POWER. And it still was cantankerous, but when I tapped around the battery on the left, I could get power. After 6-7 times of doing this I got enough voltage to start. Then it was fine.
So now to go try to find the short and tighten what ever. I have to agree that is is somewhere around the battery. But it is dark here, and I am off on vacation, and the airport in DFW becones in the AM, so this might have to wait until I get back. Although if it is shorting then the battery will be dead after a day or two so I had better try to fix it today.
Will post what I find.
