First gear frustrations

first gear seems difficult to shift into from 2nd and nuetral often on my bike, I try pulling in and out the clutch, and often have to push real hard and really kick it into first, anyone else have this issue?

no I am not sure of that, though all the other gears work just fine, up and down, its just shifting down into first sometimes, (and sometimes is getting more frequent) requires some serious force. Could this be something that might have happened stalling out in first gear learning how to get moving?

First, you should shift while moving. If you are stopped, you should feather the clutch to engage the current gear and then shift. If you (or a previous owner) have stomped on it to downshift, there's a linkage rod roughly 6" long that may have become bent. This will make downshifting even more difficult and will only worsen over time. It's about a $5 part from RonAyers.com (

) and should be replaced if bent.

this is typically while moving, or when stopped and in neutral, starting from parking and such. I'll check the linkage tonight

I notice a similar thing with mine, only in my case it is when going from 4th to 5th gear. What I've found that works is just feathering the clutch just a bit and then I can go on into 5th.

I will say that the clutch adjuster, the adjustable anchor deal right above the clutch arm, seems a bit loose, or at least it moves just a little bit, a slight rotation of a degree or two at most, but then again I am slightly wary of twisting the knob or doing anything cause then it may never shift again.

check the linkage for straighness, the more you pound your foot on the lever it the more likely it bends, it's really cheep metal.

thanks guys, shifting and releasing the clutch somewhat in every gear has so far completely solved the problem

I have a similar problem trying to get the bike in Neutral after coming to a stop in my driveway or in a parking lot. Sometimes it's impossible. It's always been this way. Is this normal? I couldn't figure out a strategy yesterday at Walgreens except to shut it off in First. And maybe I should leave it in gear?

My S40 goes into neutral very easy. Too easy
I find myself up shifting from 1st to neutral too often.

Hey, I only do that when I try to look cool in the neighborhood, speeding up the hill. I think it's a Gremlin giggling in there saying "We've got her now"
