Wasn't a jetting problem though. After installing a new exhaust flange gasket last year (incorrectly) it STILL ran badly without the choke 1/2 out. Clymer manual said torque the flange first, NOT the muffler, so I took off the muffler & started over with a new gasket & torque wrench. Torqued the header down first, THEN clamped on the muffler. Now I need the 10 degree adaptor because my HD muffler is at an angle but it runs great now! What a difference! & no choke after warm-up. Better power & crisper throttle. A cop decided I was enjoying myself too much though & wrote me a speeding ticket. 59 in a 45 zone. There goes my forkbrace budget for 3 more weeks. Ride safe. 8)

Woohoo! Very cool.  Congratulations! I'll definitely agree those exhaust leaks can be confusing if they're not obvious.  When I first did mine, I thought I was just consistently botching my carb tuning.  It turned out that the gasket between the header and block/cylinder head wasn't sealing fully.  It had looked fine to me at the time but I hadn't been comparing it to a new one.  If I had been, I would have replaced it immediately.  I hadn't realized the extent it was designed to crush in order to conform.  While it didn't looked marred, it was crushed about as far as it could go.  A new one from RonAyers.com fixed it right up.  It was a very frustrating time until I decided to just replace all exhaust gasket on the suggestion of someone else on this board that exhaust leaks could cause the backfiring I had.  I've since forgotten who it was but I thank them sincerely.
