How to remove snorkel & replace with K&N

Anyone have photos?  I'm thinking that the snorkel is that rubber thing that attached the carb to the back of the bike.  I can't tell from your descriptions where you bolted on the K&N cylinder filter.  I know I'm mechanically challenged.

The snorkel is the rubber tube that fits into the top of the air box right under the seat - let me suggest you leave it in place for now. Access to the air box for the filter change is through the right side (starboard) cover - it says ls650 on it or savage depending on what year you have right beside the toolbox cover - when you take that cover off you see the airbox cover where the stock airfilter goes or a K&N drop in - if you reach in there - at the top is the snorkel and you just push up on it and maybe pull a little at the top and it pop out, however  you maybe at risk of changing too many things all at once - I suggest you get the carb back on running correct before to take on the air flow side of it.

I agree.  While I'm a fan of the snorkelectomy, I am also an advocate of making changes separately as much as possible to isolate troubleshooting and tuning.

You might be confused about the 2 styles of K&N filters that are used.

One is a direct replacement for the stock filter. It goes in the stock airbox. This is the filter setup that benefits from removal of the snorkel.  Some people remove of cut holes in the air box door, too.

The other filter setup is a cone filter.  This attaches directly to the rear of the carb.

I'd go for the K&N cone (pod) filter.

O.K. O.K. one thing at a time.  I just figure the bike's all apart and everything.  It is just so much fun making changes.

I saw one guy's photos it looks like he doesn't even have an air box on the back.  Maybe that is the full-on snorkelectomy.

But, it makes sense to isolate mods  for trouble shooting.  I just hope the bike starts again when it is all back together.  I know my battery is good.

Yep, if you change 5 things all at once and it doesn't work, you have to backtrack to figure out what's wrong.

Either the cone or the panel filter are an improvement from what I've read. The panel filter with or wtihout the snprkel delete retains the stock look.  The cone filter would look more  "custom".  I don't think anyone has data that would tell you which is best.

If you plan to ride in the rain...Stick with the flat original style filters...The cone filter is exposed to the rain !!

And if you eliminate the air box you need to figure out how to vent the engine breather....

I think I'll stick with the original air box set-up.  I do ride in the rain.  I have a question about the K&N drop in filter though.  I think I asked somewhere else.  When I ordered one it didn't have any way to be attached to the airbox.  Maybe hence the name drop in.  It is the right size it just doesn't attach to the box anywhere.  It stock filter came with a frame and a screw that attaches the filter.

My K&N panel "drop-in" filter came with a small bracket that holds the filter in place.

I like the K&N direct replacement (or drop-in) filter and pulling the snorkel can increase your airflow later if you decide you need that.   If you do, it's very easy to remove.  You simply pull the seat and you'll be able to see the air entry above the air box.  There's a rubber boot that is divided into two halves.  That's the snorkel (#10 below). I just grabbed it with pliers and yanked it out.  You may not want to though.  Just wait and see.

Does Lancer do a V-stack for the std. carb. That and a sock (pod without the rubber moulding) cable tied on would be good. Piper Cross do sock filters over here.
