Cold Starting Tips?
02/20/06 at 08:17:52

Hey gang,

In the sub freezing temps, I can't get my savage to start until at least 10:30 in the morning and it's warmed up a little...

It turns over and all, but won't catch.

Battery is good and filled, carb in fine working order...

I do have a small exhaust leak at the muffler/header joint that I should probably fix... think this could be an issue with cold starting?

any tips?  Yes, I use the "choke."

Warm battery and warm oil are the only two things I know of that will fix that.

Was thinking of using a heat gun to heat up the crankcase, but my roommate left his out in the snow... don't feel like getting electrocuted...

Actually, out of the two, my experience has been having that oil warm probably affects it more.  Obviously having a strong battery matters, but that oil really gets thick when it gets down really cold and doesn't like to flow.

Actually, my Savage starts better in cold weather than my GZ250 did when I had it.  Go figure...  same weight of oil and housed in the same place.
