Just an observation... maybe it's me

Does anybody besides me notice that there isn't much of a difference between 4th and 5th gears?

Maybe its just me, but I have a devil of a time sometimes thinking I'm in 5th gear when I'm actually still in 4th.  Guess its just me not fully used to the Savage yet, as there was a bigger difference on my GZ250.

What's your take on the gearing?

I have to really pay attention to know which gear I'm in most of the time. I gear up and down in stead of braking and listen to the sound of the engine to know when to shift, so most of the time I don't have a clue what gear I'm in.My bike shifts very smoothly and gears down easily, I always shift into first on stopping so know where I'm starting from. Don't figure it really makes a lot of difference if I don't overwind her. She's never failed to give me what I needed when I shift so I'm happy.

5th is more like an overdrive if you ask me.

It would almost have to be, cause there sure isn't much of a difference between the two.

I've noticed it too. Around 65 I'll nudge the shifter again to make sure I'm in 5th. I wouldn't mind 5th being a little taller for the highway. It feels like it's revving a little higher than it needs to but in looking at rpm@60mph specs on other bikes in magazines it's revving lower than a lot of other middleweights, especially the multis.

I wish there was a little bit more "spread" between 4th & 5th gearing. I wouldn't even mind 1st gear being a little lower. I guess I need a 7 speed tranny.
