When finished with the carving and glass work, I will cut the hole for the gas cap, and use that hole to pour in the acetone to disolve the foam.

Lancer, how will you rig the cap so it locks on? Is there a special type of cap for just a cut hole? (forgive my ignorance)

After cutting the hole and removing the foam, I will form a mounting surface around the hole to match the gas tube/cap of my choice, which is a stainless steel aircraft style flip-up cap.  They are a bolt in type of cap, and I will layer in a piece of metal ring around the tank hole and seal it in with fiberglass.  Then holes are drilled to match the cap so it can be bolted in place.
It is a fairly simple operation really.
