Recommended Progressive Shock for LS650
01/10/06 at 12:22:02

I realized the other day after doing my seat mod, which did help a lot, that my some of the back pain I get from riding may be due to the stock suzuki shocks. Consequently, I'm now looking into the Progressive 412s.  Which are the model numbers and sizes most of you are using? How involved is the installation?

If you use Progressive's Application Finder for the Intruder 800, the shocks will fit the Savage.  I am using the heavy duty 12.5" set and love them.  However, they do increase the height significantly.  If you want to maintain a heaight closer to the originals, I'd go with the 11's or 11.5's.  I doubt there's really a lot of difference between the standard and heavy duty versions for the most part.  I'm 200 lbs, so I opted for the heavy duty just on principle.  Swapping them out is probably the second  easiest upgrade I've done on the Savage.  The easiest was the SuperBrace and the third easiest was changing the headlight bulb to a xenon.

ROb,

Since you raised the rear with taller shocks, did you notice and change in handling?

I could use a higher saet, but I've heard that it might negatively affect handling.

Cigaro...I put 11.5 shocks on my savage as the original were 10.5 in.    1 inch in longer shock will raise the rear fender up 2 inches  keep that is mind...I do like the ride  ( smooother)  I bought a set of take off Harley sportster shocks for $20 and removed the mounting gromets. Installed the Savage mounting rubber gromets, as the harleys have smaller mounting holes.. New progressive shocks are the way to go but I am to cheap to pay what thay ask for a set !!  Ouch  Smiley

SAAM,
Why would shocks that are an inch longer raise the rear fender (and the rest of the bike I assume) two inches?

I swaped out to Progressive Shocks #412-4207C+ which are 12.5' center to center.  It was a 40 minute job including finding the jack and getting set up.  Actually, one should be able to change the shocks out in about 25 minutes -- I just fiddled around with other things on the bike.

It is my opinion that 12.5' shocks are the tallest that work well.  In fact, if I did it over again I would not use anything taller than 12" even though some have used 14".

So then an 11" or 11.5" will work fine and be a pretty similar match to the stock Suzuki ones? Or if you get a slightly longer one, say a 12", does that raise the bike height enough to be noticeable when riding? Meaning, do you feel that you get an extra inch in stretch? And do the lengths make any difference in absorption? I weigh 172.
