I personaly like the 11.5 It does have an improved ride and is more comfortable at a stop light sitting a little higher ( I am 5'10") tall...Any Higher makes the rear fender to tire clearence look a little excess...Just my opinion....

I'm using the heavy duty 12.5" (412-4214C+) and they definitely raise the seat at least 4".  It feels different but I don't think it really handles much differently.  At least not in any adverse way that I've noticed.  The riding position is just altered slightly.

Here's a "before" and "after"...

Rob
Do the new shocks throw you more forward on the seat. That looks like what I need to do for my S40. I sit at the hump, even with the mod to the seat, and still feel like I am rolled towards the tank versus sitting comfortably.
The longer shock change might be better than rebuilding the seat surface to get it flatter. The dual sport have the clearance under the fender and rear tire. Did it change the drive belt or rear brake lenths/tightness? I guess it shouldn't as you just raise the support at the fulcrum under the seat.
Why doesn't Susuki think of that? Us taller folk have trouble sitting way down, and not having the back start hurting.
Now to look for 12.5" heavy duty shocks.
Thanks for photo.

I don't know. To me it looks like the 12.5, 4 inch height increase,  would raise you up but actually push you farther forward toward the tank. The angle of the shock is raising the seat in that vector. That's what I tried to alleviate with the seat mod, the sliding toward the tank. Is that the case Rob?

I'm sure it does cant forward slightly more but it's the entire bike, tank included... not just the seat.  I don't notice it.

I have 12.5" Progressive 418 shocks on mine and I love the extra travel and the quicker steering with the decrease in steering angle.

Did you get the heavy duty version Progressive (412-4236C) or the standard one?
I'm thinking you might be right on the length/and height changes.
Ah, another search of the web for elusive shocks/springs, nothing I love to do more than seaching thru dead end dealer pages. We're not large enough to have an HD dealer, so left over parts from mods to other bikes are few and far between. There is a huge HD store in North San Antonio, but that 250miles there. I'll look to see if they have a website.
Thanks for input.

Okay, I broke down and have ordered a pair of the Progressive 412-4037C shocks.
??? So Savage Rob---the questions are:
How hard was it to get the old ones off, what was used to get/keep the bike upright? And these should look just like the OEM ones but be better quality, and just a bit taller, so the stealership shouldn't get bent when I go in for next tune up and the seat is higher, and the motor has a more forward tilt? Do I need something to lift the frame with to get them on?
I have the tools but not the real shop stuff, like lift hoist, or frame raiser or ceiling or cross beam supports, etc.
Would I be better to take these to a local shop and ask for help, or try to do it myself?
I am much more comfortable with the 12v side than the hard mechanical side.

412-4037c? wow those have a very heavy spring rate - can you still change the model?

the 4037c is 11" 230/275lb sae bushing shock - you could order the metric bushings I'm told for about $10 to make them bolt up - but it looks to me like these will be very close to solid struts on our light weight ls650 - the 4247c is the metric version of that shock.

bet you'd get a better ride from 4233c(11" 115/155lb) fairly stiff for this weight bike or the 4236c (11.5" 125/170lb)

Reel Thing, what do you recommend for me, then? I'm 171 pounds.  Here are the models from the Progressive site. 4233 C, 4201C or the 4236C? I'm open to either 11 inch or 11.5.

Standard 11"         :         412-4233C
Standard 11.5"      :      412-4201C
Standard 12"      :       412-4228C
Standard 12.5"      :      412-4207C+
Heavy Duty 11.5"     : 412-4236C

I'd bet the 4233c (115/155lb) is perfect unless your an old gezzer like me and want the softer ride of the 4232c (90/130lb)

I chose those as I am not a light weight, and while I know that if you double the weight they work with, I know that if I add pack, loaded, and other stuff, my weight will be over 300lbs. The others seem to go to 155 tops (that 310, and I think I would bottom out if I get fully loaded, 2-up, or me, pack and saddle bags).
If I am way off, let me know and will get with the seller and see if we can swap for a lighter version. They have a bunch on eBay.
I want a softer but responsive ride, not one that bounces or that beats me to death on normal streets.
