Lou Anna's refined peanut oil.  Has a higher burn temperature than the vegetable oil, and better nonstick qualities, to boot.

And I can pull over and have a fried chicken tail-gater in the middle of the ride.  Makes me a popular addition to most group rides.

I use 10W-40 Mobil Clean 5000 (petro-based) motor oil and EMGO oil filters.

I change both every 2K miles, which means that sometimes the oil is in there for well over a year (blasphemy!).

The bike only has 5K miles on it, but so far, no clutch slip (KOW).  It seems to use about 4 oz. of oil every 1000 miles.  The bike has never required a valve clearance adjustment yet.

When I fill 'er up w/ oil after an oil and filter change, I put in exactly 2 qts.,  which puts the level at midpoint in the window.

Grin  I just saw a thing on TV about a guy from Texas Instruments who uses Old Vegetable/Fry grease to run his Suburban instead of diesel, so he smells like French Fries as he drives along. Grin

Mobil MX4T synlube. I got several quarts at Schuck's - they were closing them out, for $2 a quart. I'll probably still use it after. I use it in my XR650R and that's tuned a bit racier. I figure it's cheap insurance...others may figure it's a waste of money. Who knows?

is it bad that i just use the suzuki 10-40? the shop is right next to my house and i'm too lazy to grab anything else...but if there's something that's better and cheaper out there, lemme know. I think I'm paying something like 3.90 USD a quart right now.

Just as long as it doesn't have the energy conserving starburst on the back of the bottle, then car oils work well. Energy Conserving oils will do a number on your clutch.

Most 40 weights and up that I've seen don't have those.  I mostly use Castrol 10W-40 in winter/fall and 20W-50 in spring/summer.

Yeah, what oil should you use? Does it really matter? Sometimes it doesn't. I heard a story, maybe it was an urban legend, about two guys touring through Africa in a Citroen 2CV. It ain't much of a car. It has lawn chairs for seats and a 2 cylinder motorcycle engine, but it is easy to work on, and very durable, and that's what made these things popular.
Anyways these two guys are nearing their homeland while traversing through the Sarah desert at a good clip when they run onto a rock pile. The impact knocks their buggy sideways and on inspection, discover the engines' crankcase is cracked and the oil has disappeared into the sand. Overnight they managed to epoxy the leaky crankcase but have no oil to add. They are in a remote area and after another 24 hours they become desperate. Nothing around but sand and banana trees. It seemed the only alternative was to put bananas in the engine's crankcase and hope for the best. They forced enough bananas into the engine until it was full and took off hopping for the best. They crossed their fingers and after  200 hundred miles they reached a village  where they drained the fruity elixir and replenished with real oil.
So does it matter what oil you put in your Savage? Probably not.
