My bike has done that nearly every day since I bought it.  I believe I was told that making mods to make the engine run richer helps that.  I don't know for sure, as I'm planning my engine mods for this coming weekend.  But backfiring at various times is part of the fun of the Savage.  Adds character.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely, in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid in broadside, used-up, worn out, and defiantly shouting 'Geronimo!!!'

That's a Savage.
Engine is adjusted at a very lean mixture to comply with enviromental requirements.

Look up the various post such as:White spacer, removing the idle mixture plug and adjusting the idle mixture. K&N filter, Sportster exhaust etc.

Happy wrenching

When mine first did it, I thought, "boy - she fits right in with the rest of the family!"  Now, I don't really even notice it.

It can be tuned out with some effort. It can be eliminated (according to a lot of people on the forum) with some minor modifications. I don't really think it's necessary, but it is the nature of single cylinder engines. If you don't like it take some time go through the previous posts. Tune the engine (yourself - the amount of time I spent would have been pretty prohibitive costwise if I was paying a mechanic just to eliminate afterfire).

If You don't want to hear an "explosion" and don't want to play with mods, just let the bike idle for about 3-5 seconds before You turn off the ignition.

there are about a 1,000 posts on the subject on this board.  you can get rid of it if you really want to (although it doesn't really cause any harm).  just do a search . . . you'll find all the info you need.
