How Do You Get the Valve Timing Inspect. Plug Out?
12/05/05 at 18:18:30

I'm wondering if anyone has a neat trick to get the valve timing inspection plug out.  This is the plug that you have to remove so you can turn the crank with a wrench and set it at TDC for various inspections and operations.

I'm currently using a dull butterknife held in the slot sideways (sort of) and then I rotate the butterknife with the help of a pair of pliers.  It works pretty good, I've only caused minor scratches so far.

But, there's got to be a better way.

Thoughts?

If You hit the cap with a hammer 5-6 times , it will get loose. There is a cpecial tool, but it is not worthed to spend the money. I have a thick washer that fits perfectly in the slot.  I grab it with visegrips and turn/after the allmighty hammer/.

Don't ask me.  The first time I took mine off I used the points of a pair of needle nose pliers in the slot and turned them with a big adjustable crescent wrench.  I tightened it back with a piece of wood, a paint stirrer.  It should come off next time without too much trouble.

The tool lists for $23 in the Sudco catalog.  Anyone wishing to get one can have it for just cost and shipping...about $20.
I will include them with the next regular order.
Just drop a line and let me know.

I bought the Motion Pro Timing Plug Wrench from BikeBandit.com.  It works great.

That's the same tool as recommended in the Clymer Manual.

I opt for the 50pence piece in a vicegrip or reground an old screwdriver to  fit the slot.

The Motion Pro tool is the sh*t!

If I had some other bikes that could use this tool, I'd be all over it.

However, maybe I'll try the big washer idea.

Thanks, all!
