Spark plug socket - 17mm?
11/21/05 at 13:58:17

Hi everyone,

I just finished winterizing Thumper over the weekend. (It was a two-weekend project. I must be slow...)

Anyway, on Sunday I waxed the tank, applied vinyl protectant to the seat, and stuffed an oily rag up Thumper's pipe.  Shocked

But the big job was yanking the spark plug to spray some fogging oil in the cylinder. My 17mm socket didn't fit the plug, despite what my Clymer manual said.

Now, my Clymer's only goes through 2004, and I have a 2005 model. But the 17mm socket was too small, and the 19mm was a little too big, although I eventually got it to work with a little effort.

Perhaps the true size of the plug is 18mm, but I don't have an 18mm socket in my metric socket set.

Does anyone know if the spark plugs on a 2005 are 18mm? I'd kinda like to know before I go out and buy one...

Cheers. Tammi

If You still have the original spark plug or if Your spark plug is like the original /NGK/ , You will need 18 mm socket /example why You should NEVER use a knock-off manual/. If You have an Autozone or Checker spark plug /Champion for example/ You will need 16mm or 5/8 socket.

There's one on this page that I believe works, though I don't have one myself.

I have a Nippon Denso IX 24 B (iridium,0.4mm center electrode) just over £15.

The NGK DPR 8 EIX-9 measures 18mm AF.

I bought a 18mm thin walled socket, and with a swivel, I can change the plug without removing the tank  Grin

Hi Tammie,

For a stock plug, you will need an 18mm deep-well socket.
