Which Tacho for a Savage?

This is the ... 4th? time I try to start this thread, I seem to be most unlucky. Or all phumbf.

A quick reply to those who sent me private messages (in my country a 'private' message means you want to date him, LOL!)

RHD or LHD Savage? Certainly, depends which mirror you look into when overtaking !  Grin

Greg_650, how did you link up that tacho? Is it an electronic tacho (coil?) or mechanical? In which case, where on earth did you plug it in ??? I assume it is electronic.
BUT
Most of the tachos I've seen so far are for cars, 4cylinders to say the least, and as a 4pot engine will give me 4 times as many sparks as a single at any given rpm, such a tacho would underread by no less that 75% !!!
I have found a 'Suzuki Invader T200' combined speedo+tacho, basically it is one large pod with twin needles! eBay.co.uk, item no. 8004328879, only I don't know how to post it on this thread.

Roll Eyes YES ! IT WORKED !!!
If I did this right it's because Moderator Susan is a lady and knows how to explain difficult things to intelligent, overconfident , charming guys with whiskers  Grin Grin Grin
Anyway, I've emailed the seller I don't know how many times, still no reply, the item starts at GB£75 which is a rough US$150.
Expensive or worth it?  Roll Eyes

Maurizio,

I don't know if the tach you're looking at will work or not.

The Savage can use any tach made for a Harley.  I'm installing one from www.JirehCycle.com, their part # 57-133.  It's $46 plus shipping.

Hope that helps.

Regards, David

That is interesting though.  If it works, it would be a kinda cool replacement for the stock speedo.  I wonder if it fits the tank.

couple of pics of different mounts of the same basic tach

Yup, it hooks to the coil.

It looks a lot like the one Greg_650 has on his bike.

Could well be, but boar tits have six nipples  Grin

Anyway, I'm looking at moving the speedo from the tank because I intend to fit a tank bag there, and I need to see how fast I'm going and how far I've driven before refuelling (although, monkey a$$ reminds me to stop anyway)

Oh, yes, and a small windshield anyway.

I agree Sluggo.  If I were to add one, it'd be a toy.  That said, it would need to look good.

I put a tach on a few months ago, and i found it to be extremely helpful.

It's helped me with troubleshooting issues i was having with the carb.  Helped me find the best shift points (I used to shift at too low of an RPM).

Also, on the highway, i know that 4500 RPM = 75MPH.  So, i can essentially monitor my speed with a quick glance at the tach (which i mounted on the center of the handlebars), instead of looking down at the speedo.  I can do so without moving my head . . . just my eyes.

Just my $0.02

I like a tach myself - as I said in the original post with the pics - I'm not going to have an engine that i think much of with out one. Is it mostly a toy? - most likely -  but I use it more often than the speedometer.

I guess it could be useful for troubleshooting but I know I wouldn't be watching it otherwise.  I always shift by sound/feel.

i use my handy dandy engine anyaliser with built in tach to work on the machine.

the power band is so wide there's really no bad place to shift, it just depends on personal prefrence some like to hear the thump thump thump and shift early.  others like me take it all the way up before shifting, let me tell ya, the butt knows when to shift.
