This is common.  Most get changed for stainless allen head....

Are the screws "frozen" and stripped out too?  

Do you have a hand impact driver with a phillips bit?  You can also smack down on the the bolthead with a phillips screwdriver and a hammer for a similar effect.

You can try to cut a slot in the screw for a straight slot screwdriver.

You can try a cold chisel and hammer to turn it loose.

Then there's the vise grip method, too.

You also have the option to drill out the screws and hope there's enough to grab with pliers....

Not to mention that a bandsaw might work if needed.

Or you can give up and just buy a new carb from Lancer....

I learned my lesson not to use an electric driver, or any driver.  It is too hard to control and feel if you are about to strip the head.

Give it three good taps with the screwdriver and hammer as said before, and then turn with a hand screw driver.

I was able to get a small file and file the sides of the screw head flat and then grab the head with a pair of channel lock pliers. Luck with it

Yes, it's been running very poorly--sputtering, hesitating, esp when cold when I start in the morning. Also a whole lot more/worse backfiring than when it was new. Problems developed after we stored it over the winter--we put stabilizier in the gas but I guess it didn't do the job.

Correctly? You pull it out when it's cold, push it back in after it's warmed up. I never need full choke. When we first got it you hardly ever needed it.

Yes, it's not as bad as when it's cold, but it still coughs and chugs and just doesn't run smoothly.

Anyway, I got the thing apart, let the jets soak overnight, sprayed the thing with carb cleaner and let it sit, sprayed it again, and got it put back together and it's back in the bike. Bike starts, runs super. I'm about to go ride it and see, but it's much better just idling. It backfires very very slightly off of hard throttle, and one loud pop when you turn the engine off, which it did when it ran well. The Suzuki shop said it's supposed to do this, part of how it deals with emissions. I can handle that.

Anyway, wanted to get back and say thanks to everybody. I'm going to ride it now and hopefully it's a lot better.

It ran well, no constant backfiring, grabbing, poor running. It still didn't feel as completely overwhelmingly powerful as when we first got it, but maybe that's just my memory hoary with time. We'll see for real tomorrow on the way to work on teh freeway.

Now I have to deal with teh front brake, but I'll read around and put another post for that ifneed be.
