Okay, I know most of you folks like your savages shiny, so this probably isn't for you... but I thought I'd let you know about my ghetto mod.

Step 1.  Remove liscense plate.
Step 2.  Zip tie it to the shock of your choice.
                a)  one through both LP holes and around the top
                     of shock
                b)  one through one hole and one around the
frame member that holds the shock
                c)  one through bottom inside hole and around
                     bottom spring coil
Step 3.  Apply spray paint to back of LP (for looks  Wink )
Step 4.  Remove LP braket and light; dispose.
                a)  3 bolts under rear fender
                b)  remove passenger seat and unhook wiring
                c)  replcae passenger seat
Step 5.  Ride.

In CO, they have to be horizontal, but well, tough sh*t on me, or them.  And there's some spray paint on the face of the LP, too, not necessarily on purpose, put not quite accidentally, either.

As far as interefering with the operation of the shock, well, it's 1/16th thick steel... so it's got a nice bend to it now.  Also, since I didn't pull the zip ties too tight, they kinda act like a spring for it and it does not rattle against the shock.

you'll probably get popped for no light. that's a common one.  metal of the plate will cut through tie so keep an eye on it.

Sluggo,

Good point on the cutting thing... thanks!  Smiley

As far as the light goes, I've got a good sidemount setup on my Vstar, not a ghetto job.  A cop hassled me about the verticallity-horizontality issue once, but made no mention of it not being lit.  I'll wait and see.

Might get a grommet (or LED mounting bushing) for each hole to protect the wire ties.

Or use the stainless ties.  They sell 'em for use with header wrap.

if you were to mount the plate on the other side it would hide the off set of the shock.

I had my plate the same place u do ,but i went into a rest stop ,and when i came out, half of the plate was on the ground with the frame!i believe someone opened a car door in too it .but after that i put it where nothing could hit it.i think it looks better,it follows the "skiny" lines of the bike.

Well, at any rate, if it falls off, I'm not gonna worry too much, just go down to the DMV and get a new plate and wait for it to fall off too.

I went from Fort Collins, CO to Salt Lake City on my V* a couple of weeks ago.  Somewhere along the line the plate bracket broke off (still haven't figured this one out).  I didn't notice it until I got to SLC.  Rode home later w/o problems...

As far as someone knocking it off, well, my handlebars stick out pretty far and I sharpened the ends to a  point... gonna lose an eye oen day... (after all, I did paint "SH*IT 4 BRAINS" on it...)
